You can screw up your traction in any gear, anywhere on the track...if you get a good launch and then you have too much boost on you next shift, you can still pull the tires loose, and in turn, kill your time at the end...I've watched it happen...who knows...mabe there was crap on the track or something?

i think the d series has lower compression than the b series. i've read about guys here boosting 10-12psi on stock internals w/d-series motors. i'm boosting 11psi myself on a b16.
