Default How important is idle speed??

I have a d16z6 running a 15g on it. I am idiling pretty low.. like 600 rpm. How important is idle speed? I also want to know if a low battery thats about to die will cause the idle speed to decrease. I also would like some tips about launching at the track vs. street. Any input on these things or my car in general would be apreciated. Thanks.

Low idle is usually caused by the TB being loose or it was backed off. Just tighten the adjustment screw until it revs normally. You probably knocked it loose moding it.

loose?
tighten it?

Ok, 99% of the time, these screws are never even tampered with. and I have never seen one back out or move. If you want to adjust your idle air mixture screw, you will need to loosen it to increase your idle. Also, I am guessing you retarded your timing slightly? this will also cause your rpms to be low.

I was posting on previous experiences with my car. Sorry, never changed my timing at the distributor. I see it as bad practice. I used an optical sensor for my timing, and tweak it with a potentiometer. I played with distributors when I was young. I don't like them.
Oops my bad with the screw direction I was thinking of what happened on my Saab

I was not telling him to adjust his idle issues with his timing. I figured it was a reason why it was low. Since alot of people with stock hondas get scared and back their timing all the way down and this can affect the idle.

It could be a shitload of other things as well

600 rpms is low? That seems pretty normal to me arn't stock hondas supposed to idle around 750 rpms? I think that's what my manual said. I have a stock civic with D16Z6 and it runs around that.

I drive an hour to work everyday though and sometimes when I get off the freeway it will be idling at like 200 rpms. It has never died on me though and it runs perfect.

Should I try to adjust my idle? It runs good when I am just driving around town it only goes really low when I get off the freeway after driving and hour or so.

Me too... got a D16Z6... when its cold... it idles at 1200... when you drive it for a while it goes down low to about 400 and stays there... you know ***** wrong when it starts to surge...
