Default How do I turbo my B16 for around the same price as my D16

O.K. I made my own turbo kit before and have made plenty other ones for friends cars once they saw what I did and how cheap I did it. BUT I dropped a valve in my Turbo ZC and decided I was done with ZC's and D series and I switched to a B16 which I have already modified the motor and trans alot and love this motor.

Well I know "B" series motors are going to be more money to turbo then "D" series cause of the bigger turbo you need and you can't just goto a junkyard and use a $25 HF manifold anymore. So I'm asking ALL you junkyard turbo know it alls for your experience and help. How do I have to go about buying parts and what to use so I can turbo my B16 but is there anyway I can stay in or near the price range of a D series. I

f I have to spend more money I will I have no problem spending money if I have to but I want to make sure I'm not over paying and I haven't turbo'd a B series motor yet when it comes to parts. So what would you recommend what to buy and is there any certain place I should buy these parts from. You should basicly understand what I'm talking about.

Cause I want to make my own kit again and I'm not wasting my money on a BAD ( aka DRAG ), F-Max, or Rev. Hard over priced kits which I've heard bad things about and I've personally put ( myself and another mechanic )a F-Max turbo kit on a 00' Prelude ( not sure what year but it was that body style the last style made )That the kit fit like crap. We had to cut the fan shroud cause it was hitting the exhaust side of the turbo and would have metl it if not cut.

I know I'll always have to modify cetain things no matter what.. I went threw it with my turbo ZC but I'm not going to spend $3,000 on a turbo kit that I can make for $2,000. Lastly how much will I expect to pay total in the end for everything I'll need... i.e. Turbo, Intercooler, Waste Gate, etc. Also what turbo should I use....the same T3/T4 turbos every kit out there uses. Thanks to any out there that reply to this in t he help you'll be given me... Thanks again.

Just try and find an early 80s Saab 900 turbo at the junk yard. They came with .42/.63hot side.that should be just right for that b series.I pulled one of those before. Those turbos are externaly wastegated. As far as the mani. goes youll have to make your own, find a log style on ebay,or get an SSautochrome. That is a crappy but cheap manni and there are some people here that are using them. The only reason Im sugesting that manni is couse its cheap and if I was on a tight budget I would get one.but Im not so f- those things..lol.As far as I can see that should be the only difference between boosting a B and a D.

Yes I used DSM 450cc's and DSM BOV and even a DSM SMIC ( side mount intercooler ) on my ZC which I loved that intercooler cause I tried using a starion FMIC and I didn't like it. The SMIC was alot better and way more effecient. I still after all's said and done as far as the injectors go felt the 450cc's were WAY too big for my ZC. It was dumping a hella lot fuel and I had to set my AFC to almost -48% just to lean it enough.

So this time around I wil be getting either MSD or RC's 310cc injectors cause I used them on a friends ZC I made a turbo kit for and I was much happier with those. I do 100% ALL MY OWN WORK by the way. As far as a cheap budget... I'm not really on a cheap budget. I just don't want to spend more money if I don't have to you know what I mean. Why pay $3,600 for a Rev. Hard stage #3 Turbo "B" series kit when I can make one one self thats a spit'in duplicate kit for only $2,000 or less you know what I mean.

As far as manifolds go a friend of mine has a real nice cast iron manifold I believe it's either DRAG or Rev Hard thats he's selling to me for only $125 just cause it's me. As for the turbo. I guess I'll either use a T3 or a T3/T4. I'd like to use the T3 but the turbonetics T3 is internally waste gated Which almost every turbo I've ever messed with that was internally waste gated is a b*tch to work with sometimes. I don't mind spending cash if I get a quality product cause I'm a firm believer of the old saying " You get what you pay for ".

But THANK YOU for the recommendation on that manifold but some people are on very low budget. I mean I don't have a million dollars but I'm limiting myself to not spend over $2,500 dollars for everything once I'm done ( Turbo, Manifold, Wastegate, BOV, Charge pipes, Lines fittings, Connectors, FMU, Injectors etc. ) at the most if I have to no more then $3,000. But I've done some research and it lookslike I can stay around the $2,000-$2,500 easly. Also I'm going to NOT use a AFC this time... I will try to use a Vortech FMU with a 8:1 spring and see how I like it.

The only thing I don't like FMU's is cause alot of time they dump fuel or add fuel when it's not needed but I'd rather spend $80 now and get by and have my car running good and be able to enjoy boost then having to wait till I save up $350 for a AFC. I'm very good with AFC's now but I sold mine cause I have a VTec motor now and want to try the FMU and see how I like it. If I don't then I'll sell that and just buy the brand new V-AFC version 2 cause the new one has programable settings.

Well thanks for all your guys help I found a site that gives me everything I'll need and what to get to make my own kit just found the link on this site about a hour ago. I will be posting updates and pic.'s as I put together my kit. Thanks again

I'm confused. Did I just read that you just found this site? You have a few hundred posts and have been a member for as long as I have. WTF?

Im planning to put a T3 Super 60 (.42 exhaust/.60 compressor) turbo in my B16 at the moment. The cost of my entire system will about $2000 and I will be using the RevHard manifold along with the downpipe and their elbow for the wastegate. Yes I know I know... I'm buying RevHard parts... OH NO! But in all seriousness, I'd rather not lose AC or buy the cheaper manifolds that someone cant guarantee for at least one year. I've heard lots of good thing about RevHard's manifold and would most likely go with them. My T3 is an internally wastegated model but am taking the wastegate off and just using a Ford 5-bolt T3 blocking flange on it... dont know how well boost will hold but I hope it holds well for 7-8psi and doesnt spike too much because I'm doing that. Still havent figured out if I wanna go that route or just leaving it internally wastegated and get a custom T3 downpipe--it'd save me money, but will I still keep AC is the big question. Yes, AC is worth it to me!

In terms of fuel managemnet, I'll be doing 2g DSM 450cc's with inline resistors (but am thinking about going with the smaller injectors ~380cc?), using Uberdata--I could just use the Apexi V-AFC but am opting for Uberdata at the moment...

Okay this is a long essay... PM me if u wanna know more specifics or if you have any thoughts on my setup.
