hmt bmw - featuring my 1st welding.. and engine failure
picked up this 95 525 5 speed pretty cheap. i already had most the parts to boost it from my old 328 , engine was healthy. couple days later it was backed into in my drivway
on with the turbo part though
here it is
test fit the manifold, its made to be bottom mount but i flipped it. didnt want to f with low slung turbo and bad oil drain options. 16cm non-wg housing. obviously would kit the head
so i was sick of bring ---- to get welded so picked up a hobart, pretty much no previous welding experience :1 gas makes this ---- so easy i was still getting the hang of it (see hole) i was gona practice on piece of exhaust pipe but i burned a few holes in it said ---- it i just went to work
proud of this thing cause its the 1st thing i made with a welder
barely clears the hood
tapped the pan. on the car
3" vband on the holset. dont really know why i welded it on the outside..
my first down pipe
china wg where ac compressor was. no room by the head.
$5 for 2 spark plug anti-foulers, which when cut make o2 bungs
one 45 was used in the whole exhaust, pie cuts look better anyways summit muffler where cats were
7" tall intercooler and ebay electric fan shoved in there
welfare boost gauge setup with water temp gauge and e tape as holder
started it up and it sounded pretty ruthless. put in the new 42# injectors and loaded the basemap took it for a rip.
wg was opening at 4psi and the china 50mm bov was not doin ----. damn chinese kids.
ripd the line off the wg
cut out a loop on the bov spring
i was hitting 15+ psi then, still dont think the bov was working and i kept blowing the ------ maf out the pipe. it was for a few miles but i overlooked one thing.. im pretty sure i never put premium in the ------ thing. last rip the wg was opening at 20?psi even with no line on it and i blew the maf off, fixed it, then notice all the smoke behind me pullin onto my block. now cyl 5 has 30psi compression :1 blows smoke out the valve cover
and ---- my lc1 i dont think it was even working right

Re: hmt bmw - featuring my 1st welding.. and engine failure
I'd definitely say solid 1st attempt. Now you can see why skimping on some things isn't a good idea. I understand cutting costs, but maybe all the flat rate ---- you used ended up working together to fail your engine. Get a proper BOV and WG and see where that takes you. Get some good clamps and couplers to hold that MAF pipe on too. You don't have to go super bawler like UrineMachine, but something about 1/2 that should still net you some fun results. Of course that'll have to come after the engine R&R, but seriously it's not too bad at all in those years of 5-series. Nice MIG welds for a noob too. As stated; very worthy 1st try.

Re: hmt bmw - featuring my 1st welding.. and engine failure
it was tuned by ichbinsobose (or runnin his map at least which is tune for 25psi. i think i had 87 octane in the tank cause the thing sat so long i ------ forgot and the map was tuned on 93, and the wideband was fucked up im pretty sure

Re: hmt bmw - featuring my 1st welding.. and engine failure
lol. never know but i think its the same map his car is still running on .. price was right, even if it was the tune i dont know what woulda been worse, fixing this motor, trying to setup a megasquirt, or paying way to much for other tuning (more then i value my motor)
and i had t bolts but the maf was slightly bigger then 3" and with couplers streched on it wouldnt fit.. and im still not convinced not to use cheap parts :P too many successful times used on my hondas

Re: hmt bmw - featuring my 1st welding.. and engine failure
Why cant you run the MAF before the turbo in the Inlet side. It will still be monitering the same amount of air.
Although I dont much about BMW's. They probally have some crazy setup that doesnt allow this?
