Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si - $2009 Starts page 4

I have had a few messages asking me to see pics of the car I am building for the $2008 GRM Challenge.. So I thought I would start a thread on the car.
If you didn't know about the GRM challenge , here are the rules.. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/new...enge-rules.php basically you can spend $2008 to build a car to compete in a drag , autocross and a concours The Turd.. Attachment 19926 I got this when I worked as a Business manager at a chrysler dealership , it's an 89 Si with 280,000kms on it. The front springs were broken , the MC was fucked ,but it ran great..even had some wood holding up the drivers seat.. No AC , No passenger side mirror either (factory delete panel) , Sunroof still works. I drove it from Toronto to Montreal the night I got it with a dealer plate on.. It rode like ---- , but ran great.. Went to a party and ended up drag racing my friends 89 944 at about 4 in the AM.. the little civic held it's own (shockingly). A month later and about 2000Kms a bearing let go and it started drinking oil.. . Pretty clean for a CDN car.. someon put a Macco paint job on it in the last year... good from far , far from good. Attachment 19927 Pile O Junk Attachment 19928 Attachment 19929 we went through the car with floor cleaner ad a pressure washer , she cleaned up well. Got rid of the stereo with a Aluminum panel , threw in some autometer gauges I had kicking around and a sparco Seat that has a burt base due to a welding mishap.. I am gonna recover it in red Plaid.. Welded in a harness bar and threw in a sparco harness. I made door pulls ala RS porsche using a backpack strap.. looks baller. We pulled the engine out , removed the hood which had seen some bondo shinanigans and pulled the front fenders off. The fenders were rotted to hell at the bottom due to clogged rain gutters. Thankfully my partner in the project (the 944 guy) has a father with a bodyshop..so we got 2 new fenders for $70.. Attachment 19930 with the motor out , hood and fenders off we put the car on the trailer an headed to the local DIY car wash.. soaked the engine compartment with industrial floor cleaner... powerwashed it clean. Then the real work began.. We have built a few cars and everytime we do we laugh at factory spot welds.. Well not this time. We ground out all of the factory seam sealer and welded up the entire front end.. took about a day to do , but the difference is unreal. We used to be able to push on the front and watch it flex.. not now... resealed it with seam sealer and a brush (like the factory) scotch brite and primed the engine compartment , then shot it with some armour coat popey red.. Work you can't see... the car has all poly bushings , Koni's and Coilovers... Attachment 19931 new hood , a freebie from a local with a Hump ZC in his car. I removed the fender liners , no rust so I just shot them with undercoat. The A-Arms are Ebay specials.. adjustble camber.. the Koni's are reds and the coilovers are Ching Chongs.. since the engine burned and puked oil all overfor the last 280'000kms the tanny was a mess. It shifted great , but was covered. Enter the Welfare tranny bath Attachment 19932 I used an air pump and pretty much every cleaner I could find and just let it soak.. I was pised I couldn't find Lye Anywhere.. even farmers supply.. would have done a nice job... the tranny looks ok now , but I wil probably disassemble it and bead blast it... Attachment 19933 this is the D16Z6 I got.. a local on my forum Swaped to a B series so I picked this up with a tranny for $100 , I am gonna sell the tranny as I want to keep the Si tranny for ease of install... going to do the usual window weld to all the mounts. A friend of mine does powdercoating and I was goofing off with this system. I did the Intake in wrinkle black and the valve cover in Wrinkle red... the valve cover needs to be redone.. I suck.. thank god it's free. I got the motor apart over the last few days and was shocked at how nice it was inside. I probably could have left it alone and made good power with a tune.. but I have to run pretty fast to be in any kind of contention.. The 2nd place car last year was a 92ish coupe weighing in at 1880Lbs D16z6 , t25 , chng chong manifold..long story short it ran 12.7 @ 107.. pretty impressive for the investment. Attachment 19934 not a bad looking bearing Attachment 19935 Pistons seem Ok ...but I am using vitara's Attachment 19936 Starion Intercooler ($40 from a local) and a T3 turbo from ebay apperently off of a saab.. not sure if I beleive that.. he had it listed at a T3/4.. Paid $60 for it. Attachment 19937 Attachment 19938 13" Hoosier Slicks $100 from archer racing (Ebaay agin) they are brand new Attachment 19939 13" CSA alum wheels that were on the car when I got it.. Attachment 19940 CAn O Bends Attachment 19941 Chair O Bends Attachment 19942 A really nice sanitary stainless 2.5" 90 egree bend ..I picked up 5 of them fo the corvair turbo. Attachment 19943 I am taking the motor to a machinist friend on Friday to have it looked over and make sure it's all good. he is gonna hot tank it for me and check it out for free.. I just have to put the name of his shop ont he side of the car somewhere.. no biggie to me. I picked up a HF manifold from a member here and an ACT clutch (used) Im at $1060 so far... this site has been a HUGE help , can't thank you enough.. I am gonna plaster HMT stickers on the turd to show my love. JM 00Tdi , Audi 17" monoblocks , H&R's 89 Si GRM $2008 86 Fiero GT , 32V northstar , 5spd , standalone , spec clutch ..still a POS 79 Caddy 425 Cu in ..bone stock and minty fresh 66 Corvair turbo WRX intercooler , T04E Arizona car..better than new 56 Velam Isetta ..not sure what to do with it yet |

Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
yeah.. I have ebay auctions , reciepts for paint ..everything... I have photo documented it all too..
I just finished beating the snot out of the crank pulled on the Z6 , going to use the pulley from the old Si motor as it has no powersteering or AC ribs and is just a single pulley. I am contemplating porting the head.. I want the car going (less cosmetics) by may 23rd for our clubs lapping day... the contest isn't until Oct 23rd so I have lots o time to tune and sort it out. A local kid has a ZC LSD tranny for $150 I am tryin to get my hands on... |

I was gonna work on the car today , but I went out last night and was pretty much useless today..
I got this off of ebay , guy had it listed at a t3/t4 , Did a google search of the part number Saab 9000 -94 2.3 Benzin 452083-1S Garrett TB25 Oh wells... Now , even though it's small , I don't think all is lost. The autocross course they had last year was a mid 30 sec course.. really short.. probably not a lot of room to spool up.. So a smaller turbo , combined with the Si tranny and 13" tires may not be too shabby.. Attachment 19871 Attachment 19872 I also found a set of 13x10 (4 of them) hoosier slicks.. After reading the rules the autocross tires have to be DOT , the drag tires do not.. I got them off of ebay a while back (they aren't the 185's pictured above) Im Kind of at a standstill until I get the motor back , he called today to say the cylinders look mint , no need to bore them (thank god I have 75mm vitaras) , so He's just gonna hot tank it for me.. Im not gona get him to redo the cross hatch on the walls , it was gonna be a few bucks and I have the tool to do it myself.. I have to be mindful of my budget... |
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
Honing the cylinders isn't hard at all, if you have the tool you definitely should do it yourself.
|
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
When you get a chance figure out what inlet flange it has, or if you change turbo's just let me know.

Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
sweet build.
i had a tb25 on my d16z6 from a pontiac sunbird gt, the turbo looked different than that but it had a .48 compressor housing and was a standard t25g flange (sr20) the wastegate was set at 2.5 psi stock and with a boost controller my car would only make around 10 lbs of boost and drop off to 5 at higher rpms :( i dont know how close the saab tb25 is but the sunbird one sucks balls. http://orlando.craigslist.org/pts/548667422.html this is what i had. i would look for something like a 14b...larger yet still cheap and nice spool up. |
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
Im hoping a few other people chime in as well with some ideas as to what turbo to use.. I don't want a lag monster , but I would like enough to go mid 12's...
|
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
A cheap eBay t3/t4 50 trim would be perfect for your budget.
|
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
This is pretty cool. When do you have to have the car complete by? Makes me wonder if i could actually do this... If you tune the car yourself do you create receipts for it? I know they prolly want receipts for the chip and zif socket.
What happens when people give you used parts for free? I need to check out the rules and talk to some of my friends back home. |
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
Has to be ready for Oct 23rd...
I want mine going for may 23rd our clubs lapping day so i can drive it for the season (lapping and autocross) I am gonna tune t myself , I have a Lm1 wideband and some friends willing to lend a hand U have to keep a reciept of everything you buy. Paint , supplies ect. Im fortunate in that I paid a legit $100 for my car , then I sold the stereo in the car for $100.. YOu can recoup up to %100 of the car , up to $1004 |
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
Man i hate people who tear up si ef hatch's. I have wanted one for so long, and there are only two in the area around me and both want about 3 grand for theres, and they aren't even that good of condition. Please please please don't ---- that car up and be a fag.
|
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
how am i ""fag"" taking a car that would have been taken to the wreckers and dumping 2 grand in it to compete in a competition ?? How is the car fucked up?? I took out the interior which was eaten to rat ----..
the car has a ------ $200 paint job , the rockers have been replaced by some ------ tool who didn't know what the ---- he was doing the suspension was shot... So if by being a fag you mean Koni's coilovers Poly d16Z6 turbo'd new paint rockers Sparco seat Roll bar Integra brakes vitara's TT rods hoosiers Then yes I am a giant fag... If the dealer would have kept it the car would be in the wreckers right now with little rice a roni ---- tards picking it clean , or even better , maybe some kid would have bought it , put a giant wing on it and revved on everything in sight.. right now it's sitting in a garage with vettes and porsches ..geez... what a horrible fait.. someone who is compitent at building cars got ahold of it and did something that is in the true spirit of this forum..building a fast car on the cheap. if you have NOTHING useful to contribute please stay the ---- outta the thread. I don't care if you have wanted one since jesus was a cowboy. It's my ------ car and I will do with it what i please.. Like an 89 Civic is some sort of Jewel.. the canadian car market is smaller than that of Californias , so Im pretty sure if you opened your eyes you could find one.. |

Pulling appart the head
Attachment 19824 Attachment 19825 there is some minor discoloration ont he cam bearings , the cam itself looks fine , so once I replace the seals and port it I am just gonna slap it back together.. Attachment 19826 |
Re: Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si Build 56K no way
I fyou are still kicking around the idea of what turbo to go with. Im gona say you should pick up a small 16g. You can push some good numbers out of them and the spool time is is pretty quick. you could easily push 20psi out of it.
Cam journal looks good to me. Ask chris on here (hes a modarator) about port work, Ive heard hes the go-to guy when it comes to throttle bodys and porting intakes. |
