Grassroots-motorsports $2008 Civic Si - $2009 Starts page 4
I have had a few messages asking me to see pics of the car I am building for the $2008 GRM Challenge.. So I thought I would start a thread on the car.
If you didn't know about the GRM challenge , here are the rules..
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/new...enge-rules.php
basically you can spend $2008 to build a car to compete in a drag , autocross and a concours
The Turd..
I got this when I worked as a Business manager at a chrysler dealership , it's an 89 Si with 280,000kms on it. The front springs were broken , the MC was fucked ,but it ran great..even had some wood holding up the drivers seat.. No AC , No passenger side mirror either (factory delete panel) , Sunroof still works.
I drove it from Toronto to Montreal the night I got it with a dealer plate on.. It rode like ---- , but ran great.. Went to a party and ended up drag racing my friends 89 944 at about 4 in the AM.. the little civic held it's own (shockingly). A month later and about 2000Kms a bearing let go and it started drinking oil..
.
Pretty clean for a CDN car.. someon put a Macco paint job on it in the last year... good from far , far from good.
Pile O Junk
we went through the car with floor cleaner ad a pressure washer , she cleaned up well. Got rid of the stereo with a Aluminum panel , threw in some autometer gauges I had kicking around and a sparco Seat that has a burt base due to a welding mishap.. I am gonna recover it in red Plaid.. Welded in a harness bar and threw in a sparco harness.
I made door pulls ala RS porsche using a backpack strap.. looks baller.
We pulled the engine out , removed the hood which had seen some bondo shinanigans and pulled the front fenders off. The fenders were rotted to hell at the bottom due to clogged rain gutters. Thankfully my partner in the project (the 944 guy) has a father with a bodyshop..so we got 2 new fenders for $70..
with the motor out , hood and fenders off we put the car on the trailer an headed to the local DIY car wash.. soaked the engine compartment with industrial floor cleaner... powerwashed it clean.
Then the real work began.. We have built a few cars and everytime we do we laugh at factory spot welds.. Well not this time. We ground out all of the factory seam sealer and welded up the entire front end.. took about a day to do , but the difference is unreal. We used to be able to push on the front and watch it flex.. not now... resealed it with seam sealer and a brush (like the factory) scotch brite and primed the engine compartment , then shot it with some armour coat popey red..
Work you can't see... the car has all poly bushings , Koni's and Coilovers...
new hood , a freebie from a local with a Hump ZC in his car. I removed the fender liners , no rust so I just shot them with undercoat.
The A-Arms are Ebay specials.. adjustble camber.. the Koni's are reds and the coilovers are Ching Chongs..
since the engine burned and puked oil all overfor the last 280'000kms the tanny was a mess. It shifted great , but was covered.
Enter the Welfare tranny bath
I used an air pump and pretty much every cleaner I could find and just let it soak.. I was pised I couldn't find Lye Anywhere.. even farmers supply.. would have done a nice job... the tranny looks ok now , but I wil probably disassemble it and bead blast it...
this is the D16Z6 I got.. a local on my forum Swaped to a B series so I picked this up with a tranny for $100 , I am gonna sell the tranny as I want to keep the Si tranny for ease of install... going to do the usual window weld to all the mounts. A friend of mine does powdercoating and I was goofing off with this system. I did the Intake in wrinkle black and the valve cover in Wrinkle red... the valve cover needs to be redone.. I suck.. thank god it's free.
I got the motor apart over the last few days and was shocked at how nice it was inside. I probably could have left it alone and made good power with a tune.. but I have to run pretty fast to be in any kind of contention.. The 2nd place car last year was a 92ish coupe weighing in at 1880Lbs D16z6 , t25 , chng chong manifold..long story short it ran 12.7 @ 107.. pretty impressive for the investment.
not a bad looking bearing
Pistons seem Ok ...but I am using vitara's
Starion Intercooler ($40 from a local) and a T3 turbo from ebay apperently off of a saab.. not sure if I beleive that.. he had it listed at a T3/4.. Paid $60 for it.
13" Hoosier Slicks $100 from archer racing (Ebaay agin) they are brand new
13" CSA alum wheels that were on the car when I got it..
CAn O Bends
Chair O Bends
A really nice sanitary stainless 2.5" 90 egree bend ..I picked up 5 of them fo the corvair turbo.
I am taking the motor to a machinist friend on Friday to have it looked over and make sure it's all good. he is gonna hot tank it for me and check it out for free.. I just have to put the name of his shop ont he side of the car somewhere.. no biggie to me. I picked up a HF manifold from a member here and an ACT clutch (used)
Im at $1060 so far...
this site has been a HUGE help , can't thank you enough.. I am gonna plaster HMT stickers on the turd to show my love.
