Re: Everything you need to know about oil lines.

Do you have enough oil in the engine. With the oil cooler and all those extra lines your oil capacity is much greater. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? It might take awhile for the oil to move around all the ---- with just cranking the engine with the battery. Remember that the oil pressure is only around 6-8 psi at idle.
So, the first thing to do is make sure you have added the right amount of additional oil for all your new components. Then, start at the block and check for oil. unhook the line running from the block to the cooler... crank it a few times... if oil comes out of the block then hook it back up and move it the next point and crank it again. keep repeating this process all the way around your system until you find the stop that doesn't have oil. More then likely there is not enough oil in your engine to fill the engine, oil cooler, turbo, and all the lines.

Alright guys I am not new at fabrication or modification, but I am new to the turbo side of things, so my question is simply this if I don't want to tap into the oil pan for the return line could I run a filter relocation kit and run both feeds off of the lines to and from the filter? Will this provide enough oil pressure to the turbo without causing any backup? Thanks a lot I am getting pretty close to finishing my project just having some issues with the return line.

i guess you could, but i don't know about the pressure. i think there is some sort of oil pump mod you can to to up your pressure though, i'm not totally sure though. but i am sure someone else will have a real answer. :y

I know this is late and you hopefully already found an answer elsewhere, but someone else might need this...

Since turbo's do not like oil to flow through at high pressure, it is not a good idea at all to have the turbo inline with the flow of the engine's oil supply.
The oil return line needs to dump somewhere with no back pressure. If you were to run the turbo oil inlet and outlet in parallel with some kind of oil relocation/cooler system, you'd either end up with too much oil pressure going through your turbo or in the case of a restrictor put into this setup, you might end up with oil flowing backwards or not at all (too many variables for me to deduce right now).

Now I might be talking out of my ass right now as I'm just looking at this from a theoritical aspect and I haven't actually applied any of this, but if anyone cares to chime in, I'd appreciate any valid corrections.

I also wanted to run the turbo inline with a filter relocation kit. I don't like drilling holes in my car/engine. But after reading a bit I realized it's a no no.

This is a screen capture of an order at www.mcmaster.com for an oil feed line setup that includes everything you need to T off the firewall instead of the back of the Honda block like many do.

Safer and for the price hopefully it passes the likes of the HMT crew...

Part numbers are in the screen shot for your ordering convience ;)

hey xenocron are these fittings for a T3,T3/To4/t4 turbos? Im in great need of fittings.

on the oil feed, i heard you can run the t fitting right out of thre block. if true and if not if you have to run a hose to the t fitting then to turbo where is the hole in the block at. i have looked on my car and can not find it, its a 97 civic. i am just starting to build my setup.

thanks chris

Re: Everything you need to know about oil lines.

I have a question which will hopefully add usefully to the topic:

My oil drain exits the turbo, curves down, sags just a hair (quarter inch) and then back up to the top of my oil pan, way above my oil level.

My question: what does zero backpressure mean? Does it mean that I can't have that little sag in there with oil in it because it will prevent oil from draining properly from the turbo, or does it mean that I'm fine as long as the hose doesn't start backing up to the turbo?

I ask because I have a used turbo setup (har dee har har eh?), a wierd ass T25 off an early 90's Saab (------- joy finding all the right fittings) and it smokes for a second or so about 5 to 10 seconds after starting up.

So: Zero backpressure means a little sag = fix that ---- right?

This is a good thread, learned all about oil lines. (n00b to forced induction)

Re: Everything you need to know about oil lines.

Is it fine to have the oil line going in from the side of the center housing and the drain line on the other side instead of having the oil line on the top of the center housing and the drain coming out the bottom? Also whats a good oil pressure for the turbo, like 45-50 psi at full throttle.
Thanks

what do you think? does gravity pull from right to left??
