Ok its not that hard really. Your wastegate opens up and lets air out when it sees a set amount of pressure from the line it is hooked to. When you put a boost controller on you put a solenoid on the line that goes to the wastegate so the wastegate doesnt see as much presssure and opens up at higher boost.. All a boost controller does is let you control how much boost the wastegate is allowed to see so it can open up whenever you want it to.

so if my wastegate is set at 8 psi, would i be able to adjust it to 6-7psi and/or i can adjust it to go over 8 psi? because i want to stay around 6-7 psi w/external wastegate, is a boost controller really important to have?

a boost controller can only raise your boost level past the stock wastegate. It can't lower it past the 8lbs that it's set at. The only way to do that is get a lower psi or adjustable gate (4-8psi) then add the boost controller.
