Re: 95 TSI AWD Project VGT Holset no 56k

The 6.0 turbos biggest problem is the carbon from diesel exhaust gumming things up and making it stick. A gasoline engine won't make the soot that a diesel will. So it shouldn't stick as and as long as it handles the temps, which is supsect it will it should work pretty well.

When I pull my motor in the next few days I will look into getting some external measurements of the turbo. Maybe someone else can measure the holset if its not installed.

Found this tonight. Fleece Performance is making a boost controller for these turbos now. It just got released.
I'm assuming it still requires the stock ECM being connected to function but I could be wrong. It might still be useful for someone trying to reverse engineer something with the stock actuator. Too bad its $395.

The hot side is NOT divided. the vband inlet is ok because we see y pipes leak all the time and I stole the flange off of one in the scrap metal bin.

no. its a "1 in 4 wins and collect 3 million to get a prize" type of cap.

Yes, i work on them every day. I plan on HEAVILY bracing it on my engine/trans. I already made the turbine inlet and downpipe for it but there is no ------- way i would run it without serious bracing, I dont care who built the manifold.

Mine uses magnetic steel for the turbine shaft.

Dimentions:
10" long parallel with shaft, 9 wide.
12" and 10.5" if you include the outlet.

Its definately one heavy prick of a turbo.

Thanks for posting the measurements.

Update
Looks like I will be towing it over to my buddies garage and tearing into it over the next few days to get the ball rolling on getting this POS back on the road and continue testing.

good thing about those is theres already three mounting points made into them. bad thing is theres no clocking to them. i was going to use one that i got a hold to for free that got burnt but i couldnt find a rebuild kit for it. as far as i know ford doesnt even sell one. now with so many people upgrading them to that big ass non-vgt garrett that reeeaaaally dont fit too well the price is starting to come down. i heard somewhere along the way someone is making a kit for these things or has one in development that has a new vgt assembly that will make this turbo spool almost twice as fast and make even more boost with the compressor wheel that will come with it. ill try to find some more info on it if i can remember where i heard it at...

oh and thanks for the measurements! when someone gets one on a table id like to get some pictures of the tape so i can see exactly where the measurements are comming from. those are good enough for now that will atleast give me an idea if i can use this thing or not

Re: 95 TSI AWD Project VGT Holset no 56k

I built a really sweet mounting bracket for it, but chopped it to ---- when I realized it wouldnt fit in my engine bay. the turbine housing IS clockable, but like i stated before, only in increments because of the position of the unison ring and to actuator arm. I have clocked mine 3 'positions'( dont remember how many vanes there are, 8 or 9 maybe).

as for getting ahold of a good one, they are most commonly replaced because of the vanes sticking. whether due to rust or coking, both can be cleaned. make friends with a ford diesel tech nearby or talk to someone in parts and buy the core for $250 and clean it up. I could get one in pretty good condition to you for $300 or so shipped probably.

And I have one on a table. give me a few days and i can get pics with a tape measure next to it.

i work on them all the time have replaced more than my fair share and actually have 5 cores sitting beside my tool box right now. ive had them appart to clean them out a few times but never really had the time to sit and stare at it too long and didnt realize theyre clockable thats a good piece of info to know. i think id rather have the holset because of the way the actuator works not being a linear stepper like on the garrett. im still trying to figure out how im gonna fit that damn thing...

I created a new auto forum tonight. :P I made a section for VGT specific stuff. In all my searching VGT information has been scattered all over the place. A little here and there. I'm hoping having a section there will help move more people to try out these turbos. I'm posting links from all the VGT stuff I've found. Anyone who is interested in them should come over and contribute there. Most of my updates will probably be there too.

Nice site I already registered hopefully TurboTalk.com helps me out info in helping me with my twincharge work.

Thanks. Its new so there isn't really any content yet. I'm going te be working on it, and trying to put up some new stuff and get some more knowledgable people over there.
