2 dump or not 2 dump...

Yeah, I just wanted to get some opinions as to what were some pros and cons of dumpin' the 02 from your external wastegate to the atmosphere as opposed to running a dump tube to your downpipe?? are there any problems that might be had by just dumping to the atmosphere, or is there some other specifics to your setup that might require running a tube to the dp...

dump to atmosphere, its been provin to make more hp and its a ---- load easier to make, and is sounds mean as hell when it opens.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

open dump pretty much works like an open exhaust once it`s opened.
DP dump routes it back to the exhaust, it does quite down, make less noise but it also mess with the flow in the exhaust

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

You know its funny how everyone on here says "Open dump it sounds mean as hell" but if you ask anyone over at TurboMustangs.net running big cube, big turbo, twin setups and they all say closed. I personally think especially on honda motor they sound like ass open.

Now on a RACE car its different, open definitely for that extra power but not on a street car.

EG-prince 03-01-2007 11:18 AM

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

dump it. definitely has been proven to make more power if done right. and who really cares how it sounds anyway, when you have the sound of a turbo spooling to go along with it

Route it in.

Open dumps sound like ---- on Hondas.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

As u can see its all about personel preference and if u dont care about sound leave it open for hp but if u want it to be quiet close it up and lose a lil hp its up to you

Jcushing 03-01-2007 11:56 AM

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

open dump will make more power if you have a restrictive exhaust/downpipe, then it cant handle the extra gas efficiency

just be carefull where you dump it since theres no oxygen in that gas, you could in theory suffocate your engine (more likely on a dyno but still applicable to real world since people often tune their car on a dyno) if you dump far enough away and have sufficient engine bay airflow.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

I had planned on venting to the atmosphere, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't goin' to cause any problems...I didn't know that dumpin' to the atmosphere could actually give you a lil bit of gain in hp...as far as sound goes, I enjoy scaring tha $hit out of old peple :y

Open dump makes mroe power

Open dump is easier to fab

Open dump is less expensive

Open dump sounds better

Open dump just makes more sence

Did you already guess my car is open dump and I wouldnt have it any other way? It sounds good

I'm have an open dump right now, i was cool at first, but it make my car sound like ass more then it allready does.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

If you want to sound like a ------- John Deere tractor at WOT then vent it, if you want to have your turbo and bov be the dominant sounds then plumb it back into the exhaust. I ran an open wg on my Eclipse and it is so obnoxious. It's loud and sounds like you have a boosted Murray lawnmower under your hood, not to mention the black soot that accompanies dumping to the atmosphere. It's way better recirculated IMO.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

BTW, open wastegate is sofaking 1999-2004, now it's just considered old school, at least around here.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

mine makes a pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sound when it opens, some sound like disel tractors though..lol people use to think it was my turbo spooling so loud ..hahaha

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

dumping to atmosphere is fine when your running high PSI but on low boosted applications it open real early, just sound like you have an exhaust leak...

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

You only hear it when the WG is open which is ususally when you're in it which tends to mean you're trying to go fast so you're not worried about sounds and convience. Sounds really raspy, but is much easier to fab. People are making it sound like you hear it the whole time, only when the WG opens...who cares? Chances are you have large diameter exhaust and a chattering 6-puck and a rattle box cabin from solid motor mounts so what's such a big deal with an open dumptube that you'll hear only when you're at full boost.

Easier to fab? look at the pic right about you, they put multiple bends in to route it around the downpipe instead of into the downpipe. Hell looks like it would be easier and cheaper to fab personally.

Re: 2 dump or not 2 dump...

mine runs open into the drivers side fender but i can barely hear it over the turbo when its open. on low boost setting (7psi) i can hear it much more. sounds like a shitty exhaust leak.

Depends on set-up and orientation of everything, but you still have to cut into the downpipe and feed the dumptube in.

Open dump get's old. I'd throtle it to right before it opened because I hated the sound. I planned on recircing it, but everything is getting redone ;).

All you'll hear is vroooooom BLLLLALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA PISSSSHT BLALLAAAAAAAAAAAAA, you won't be able to hear much else. 2.5L venting out of a 1.75 inch tube sounds like ass, and it'll crack it at 35% throttle.

Leaving it open is only worth about 5 HP on the Spec, not worth the noise. You want me to recirc it for you?

2.5L venting out of a 1.75 inch pipe sound like poo, at least on a Spec V, but that's just my opinion. It's just TOO loud on THIS MOTOR, imo, and sleeper totally goes out the window.

Re-route that ----. It's cleaner, quieter, and in many cases it's easier. Whatever tiny power loss you'll experience can be negated by cranking your MBC an infinitesimal amount tighter. If you were after the ultimate, no-holds-barred, no-expense-spared, world-beating powerhouse of a motor, you wouldn't be on HomeMadeTurbo.com anyway. ---- it. :6

Great thread. I say if your pipe has a decent diameter and its cost efficient and convenient to put it into the exhaust then do it. You will definitely lose sleeper status with open dump. Trust me on that. If it doesent matter and a little more noise doesent bother you then open dump it. You will know pretty quickly if it gets on your nerves or not. I had one open and it was fine with me. But im used to no carpeting no cat kinda ---- anyways..
