1994 Infiniti Q45 rear mount turbo project

Browsed the site a few times during my research and finally just joined to share my project. The vehicle, as stated above, is a 1994 Infiniti Q45 with a 4.5 liter V8. I'm using a T70 Master Power turbo, Tial wastegate, and tial BOV. I'm using a Shurflo 8000 series pump to scavenge the oil from the turbo. I have done all the fabrication and installation myself and think it's turning out nice. I plan to get it on the road by the end of this weekend and start tuning and testing the system.

Here are some photos of the install process. As they say a pictures worth a thousand words....

This is the muffler that was replaced by the turbo.

The oil pump is in the trunk and it's not mounted as of the time of this post. Finished mounting the gauges and running electrical for the pump and stage 2 boost controller last night. Last items I need to complete before I can start road testing is the oil pump and wastegate pressure line. I am connecting up the homemade stage 2 boost controller to that now as well but it won't be used until I get it working properly on the low boost. The boost controller is just a couple needle valves, a T, and a 12v air solenoid.

What do you all think? Praise as well as criticism welcome, Try to keep the criticism constructive tho :D

Only thing you are missing is porn... Setup looks tits man. Have you considered removing/swapping/gutting the stock cat so it doesn't ---- its innards into the turbo?

Haha, turbo > muffler! This is a great looking project, can you get some vids of it in action some time?

Stuff the porn, vids of the car are what we need. that will be a very quick car when its done. can we see the rest of it?

auto? manual? (please say manual, but i have a bad feeling about that)

that is pretty damn cool, fab work looks great, especially for flux core :)

Nice work, I think this is front page work here :y

thats ------- awesome man. how long did all that take you?? loving the see-through fuel filter return line and how you gave each muffler tip it's own source. any numbers yet? what are the goals?

They are all auto.
But the trans is great. My cuz used to have one, about 3-5 5k rpm neutral drops a day, for 3 years. Never had an issue.

And the damn cars haul ass once they get halfway through 1st gear. Which btw goes 55mph haha.

That cars gonna fly dude. GET VIDS.

Wow, thanks for the comments. The cars an auto, a few people are working on manual transplants for the Q45 but none done that I'm aware of. It's not on the road yet, very soon tho. As long as the wife will let me get in a few more hours on it this weekend I should be rolling. As you can see I like documenting everything with tons of photos. I'll definitely have a bunch of videos when I get that far.

Here are a few other shots of the car and a video of the baseline dyno run.

The wheels are 17" from a 2004 350Z. I have new shocks and lowering springs still to go on. Also have boxes of new parts to put on. I don't have a lot of free time so the projects been going on for a while now. I think I first cut the muffler out around April this year. I would guess I really only have about 5-6 full days work into it if you don't include the dreaming, design, and sourcing time which has been going on for a couple years.

Made a short video clip of the first start up tonight. I was adjusting the oil feed flow and thought I'd shoot a quick video. Love that whistle sound! I'm sure the turbo whistle will be much louder when under a load as well.

Re: 1994 Infiniti Q45 rear mount turbo project

pretty awesome!! I say you make 290ish on 5-6 lbs of boost.

qsiguy 09-23-2007 04:38 AM

Re: 1994 Infiniti Q45 rear mount turbo project

From my calculations I should be around 290+ at the wheels on 4 PSI but the dyno will tell. My 222 baseline dyno was done with a bad knock sensor. Most of the people I know with these cars are dynoing around 240 at the wheels. OEM rated HP is 280. Stage 1 will be at 4 PSI and my stage 2 will be set at 6-8 psi depending on how the tuning goes.

I'm not sure how you guys do turbo selection calculations since many of the project use used OEM turbos and specs aren't always known but I made an Excel turbo selection calculator based on the Garrett turbo selection guides. Can those of you that are familiar with turbo selection give my calculator a try and let me know what you think? Obviously, all are welcome to download it and check it out. I just made it for myself but have posted it a few places and response has been positive.

Here's the link.

Re: 1994 Infiniti Q45 rear mount turbo project

Oh ya, I think most have figured out what I did with the tips but in case not...The left tip is the turbo outlet and the tip on the right is just for the wastegate. In the photos i don't have the outlet tube attached to the wastegate yet but it's on there now and I'll take some more photos soon. The air filter mounts directly in front of the turbo and will have a K&N Filter cover on it that sheds water.

You might be thinking about the 90-93 models front grill. I don't like it either. It doesn't have a grill, just a big "belt buckle" we call it.

I'll have to look up that video you are talking about, haven't seen it yet.

Thanks guys for all the compliments, from what I've read noobs often get "flamed" hehe.

Well I managed to get it on the road tonight! Did a little testing, nothing too crazy. The wastegate spring is set for 3.6 PSI and I'm seeing a little over 3 PSI on the gauge (I know, I know, that's weak boost). I will definitely need to turn up the boost a little as I get it tuned. The BOV sounds awesome, not too loud but definitely noticeable if I'm at full boost and close the throttle. It does the pulsing sound if you know what I'm talking about. I'm sure it will be much louder as I turn up the boost. It was going into boost at around 2.5k RPM and was at full boost around 3k RPM. It felt pretty good and seemed to pull harder the more times we tried it. I believe the turbo is breaking in so it's spinning easier as it gets loosened up. I also believe it takes some time for the ECU to reset itself and compensate for the new data. This happen to anyone else?

For tuning I have equipment to burn my own EPROM chips for my ECU and it's been modified so I can swap chips easily. It's almost the exact same type of tuning the 300Z guys do. I have access to a few different fuel/timing maps and can tweak the maps as needed. I also have a Zietronics wideband O2 sensor to install that plugs into my laptop as well as the hardware and software to plug into my OEM ECU and view the parameters. I should be able to get it tuned with some trial and error. Once I get it dialed in pretty good and the 2nd stage boost switch in I will be getting on the dyno again. I also have my stock ECU and had that one installed for my first road tests as the current tune on my modded ECU runs more timing and I think fuel is a bit on the lean side.

That oil return sight glass turned out to be really awesome. I can easily see that the oil is circulating and after I shut off the motor I keep the pump running for a bit and can tell when the oil is purged from the turbo and lines. I highly recommend this <$10 option to anyone running a scavenge oil pump.

I will get a few videos made in the next day or two and get them posted. I'll get a variety of shots, drive by's, etc. I don't think an in-car video would be very exciting but let me know if you want to see something specific.

Here's a shot of the gauges

for a start, its 280ps which is 276hp, not 300, then he says normal is 240whp, which is about right all things considered.
