Tunertoys DIY manifold.

I'm thinking I should jet coat this sucker. The reason being is because I assume it will corrode and flake into the turbine, let me know what you think. If so should it be coated for 1500 or 2000 degress. Thank you! :6

i made one and sprayed it with VHT high temp manifold paint, rated at 1300F max, and its been holding strong.

is there a trick to that high temp paint? just wondering because i tried to use it on a manifold once and it just burned off.

no trick as far as i know...did you make sure you got the one that was designed for exhaust manifolds? its rated over 1300 degrees, VHT makes it.

its on Perfek360's little single came coupe. seems to still be holding. problem is it turns a funky brownish color everywhere it was handled before the manifold was used. best advice is dont touch it after you spray it, handle it as little as possible cause the paint doesnt set up til it gets hot. this manifold sat painted in my house for months.

before heat, at install time:

after handling and heating it up (running it):

My thoughts would be a very good cleaning of any oils/handprints etc then bust out some 120 grit and go to down then spray

This is exactly what i did before I sprayed it, then I used gloves to put it on to keep it grease free. It didn't get discoloured but it did fade a bit.

I wire brushed, then soakd my v6's OEM headers in a parts washer for a day.
Duplicolor 2000*F paint applied for 30m @ 450*F was flaking off & actually producing smoke within a month.. And that's just N/A LoL!

Unless VHT is better than duplicolor, I vote powder coat it, or don't do anything.

did you just say powdercoat a turbo manifold? :S

If you powder coated it, it would just melt right off.

Go on Honda-tech and do a search for DIY coating.

Read above and see that someone did what i said and it worked

H-T doesnt have tech

The sheer fact fook says it will work makes me sure it will fail. I did the spray paint with my downpipe. It took a couple of months, but the spray is chipping and dying. The spraypaint method doesn't last. The exhaust coating method will last. Do whatever you want. Its worth throwing another method out.

I used the duplicolor "engine paint" or whatever it was. It has stayed on pretty well thus far. Only used it for a little while.

If you painted the engine with it, it'll last. I tried the duplicolor crap on my 4-1 header and it just flaked off after a week or so. I've used the VHT extreme high temp paint (the 1300* plus stuff) and it actually worked pretty well on my old turbo manifold. Only time I ever had that stuff come off was with a grinder :P

Although its more expensive, you could get it ceramic coated, supposedly it keeps the heat in giving you a ---- hairs faster spool.

BBQ Grill paint works pretty darn good. I've used it quite a few times and it has never came off.

you dont know what you're talking about. the high temp paint i used on my log is still holding just fine after 7k miles

if you CLEAN the metal before spraying it, it will hold just fine

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I'll cheap out and paint the fawker. :1

Re: Tunertoys DIY manifold.

the trick is to put the paint on thin. I've found the barbecue paint works great on everything but turbo manifolds and close to the turbo on the downpipe. (a neat trick with barbecue paint, after you paint the part, rub it down with some crumpled up newspaper and it get's this cool glossy tarnished look :) )

For turbo mani and DP I've found the 1200+ degree duplicolor stuff works great.

If you put it on thick it will crack with expansion/contraction and eventually flake off. My first attempt with a turbo mani I gave the part 3-4 nice even coats, but this flaked off in no time.

If you do 1 or 2 really light coats, just the bare minimum to cover, it will last a long time, I've got 10,000miles on mine and although it's faded and chipped in a couple places where I hit with a wrench, it's still pretty much clean and shiny looking.

For prep, degrease with break cleaner, sand it/wire brush the welds, then use a metal etcher like POR15 MetalReady

I still prefer true ceramic coating, keeps the temps down.

Depends on which car you are putting it in, and how you place the manifold flange on the log.

The VHT flameproof paint does work on turbo manifolds. I've had it on for almost a year and it hasn't chipped, cracked, burned off, or any bullshit like that. You just have to follow the instuctions on the back of the can

Some manufacturers of the material use a green coating and some use black.

Do you guys think I'll have a problem with the wastegate flange welded horizontally? In my mind that's how I wanted it mounted but now I'm thinking I will have hood clearance issues. I really need to stop smoking that funny stuff. I have a problem thinking things through rationally. :1

I didn't have a wastegate at the time and this is my first time peicing together a kit.

I think you will have a problem with it because the dump tube is gonna hit the manifold. if it directly above it.
