Newbie welder...

Re: Newbie welder...
Here's a project I've been doing, sorry I don't have many pics as I'm doing it, but...
...Alright, I still have work to do with the welder car, such as add sides and a back, couple hooks for cables, rig something up when I get the tank, and paint/coat the whole unit when I'm completely done. Advice, tips, comments are welcomed if it's positive...
...and here's my messy garage. I should probbly clean it, eh?

Some of the more experienced welders here could probably tell you how to get better penetration with the welder that you currently have. I actually used to own the older version of that clarke welder. I didn't care for the drive roll as it seemed to give inconsistent wire speeds. I upgraded to a Miller 130XP. The thickest that I have been able to weld with it is 3/16". Is there any particular reason that you are trying to weld metal that thick? Personally I would wait until I could afford a larger unit to weld thicker metals, but that is probably due to my lack of skill.

you got to use a pattern too, can just drag the electrode. use a half moon technique or circles, i use a figure 8 but keep practicing the circles and half moons first, go slow, your not gonna burn through mild steel as quick so you can afford too, unlike if you where welding sheet metal, keep up the practicing.

I agree...since you obviously don't have the current to melt very deeply into the metal, you can't rely on current to get penetration. Therefore, you need to rely more on a bevel to do so. You can do a double-V groove on thicker materials, then fill the V on each side of the plate.
