Just got a cnc router, what should I make? Prize for best idea
 

My company just bought a CNC table milling machine. Able to do workpieces about 500x500x100mm X x Y x Z axis (thats about 18"x18"x4" for you imperial nogs). But I can't think of anything good I can make with it. Got any good ideas?

I think I'm going to get it to make a weed pipe first like those credit card pipes :6 If you come up with a good idea, I will make one up on the CNC machine and send you one as a prize.

I'm not going into mass production here, plenty of easier ways to make money. Just wanted some ideas of things to make. Might make some HMT key rings, something small and simple to design. Just to test out what it is capable of.

Don't think it will do dildo's, would need a bigger mill, this thing is only really for hobby use.

Is it a router or a mill? I used to program a Flow CNC router at my old job, 100” x 160” x 36”. Just a little bigger ;)

It is a cnc router, not a milling machine. We should be getting it up and running today, so I'll take some pictures of the first test pieces.

We have one of these: http://www.multicam.com/eng/Products/3000series.html and another one of similar size at work. The thing most humerous about the whole situation is I bet the Multicam is used about 1-2 hours on average a day and the other one is probably used 1 hour a week.

With injector bungs, I can't see machining intake manifold flanges being remotely profitable. Probably $10 worth of material and 60 minutes on the CNC. Figure average billing time for a CNC machine is atleast $75-150, I'd imagine you'd just be breaking even in the end.

Oh my idea....I'd machine some sort of killing device.

Thats why everyone still uses factory oem manifolds runners with a custom plenum. Those would be solid for itb's though

make a billet oil cap with the center punched out of it as big as possible and a giant barbed fitting on top as big as possible. run some home depot big nasty hose to it to the ground and you have cheap simple crank case breather. go ahead and improve on the idea ha

This CNC router is weak, I'm disappointed with it. I have had the plans for a credit card pipe sat on my computer for a while. But I will have a go at making some key rings or something. Billet oil caps are way out of the question, it would take a week! Did make sponge bob squarepants out of a sheet of scrap plastic, he now sits as the office mascot. If I make any key rings i'll take pictures and maybe send a few to Xenocron to hand out.

It has a little german 750W spindle, not much bigger than your average hand drill, don't know what sized chuck off hand, but again, pretty small. We use it for small stuff like making circuit boards and drilling complex patterns of holes in plastic for bed of nails test jigs (I work as a design engineer for a company making consumer electronics). Although it will machine aluminium, it is SLOW. But there is a lot of down time when it is free to use. I'll have to buy in some sheet aluminium because all the scrap we have is poor quality extrusions lying around. Wouldn't make a good keyring.

Well, i've just got done making up the hmt logo in negative. And ordered some aluminium sheet, 3mm thick to make these out of. Hopefully if I use a fairly big bit I can make a few quickly.

Yeah 1hp is pretty lame.

We demoed a desktop CNC wood router here with the 5hp PC router. Router bearings definately don't handle metal that well. Burned up a 1/4" 4 flute end mill before we got the chip count correct and we got some good results.
