Default general welding/fabrication question

I'm looking at learning some of the basic welding skills so I can try and do some of my own fabrication for my turbo project.

Long story short, I have access to an arc welder. Obviously I know this is not the ideal machine for the project at hand, however, I am curious to know about the arc to mig or arc to tig conversion kits. Are there any cons in using that conversion kit to do welding on exhaust piping and charge piping?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

yea, u could use it as a arc...but on low power...or u'll be blowing holes right thru.....ur better off useing a mig welder..even if ur useing flux..
as for conversion kits....the work well...but very costly... for a mig to arc...is about 1200.. so figure for tig...even more...

i think hf sell a tig torch for 39.99 then you would need the bottle and regulators and all the other gas stuff neede for a tig and something to start the arc since you most likly dont want a scatch start any more. i could see a conversion running about $600 if not more but i dont see it reaching $1200. but i personally use an arc for welding up exhausts. i use 1/32 6013 rods and i dont really have a problem with blowing hole just having to break off the slag gets old. and if you look at tig everyone that i have seen can also be used as an arc if you dont have gas so i dont see a down side to the conversion unless you are using a crappy arc like my hf one
