if your welding stainless with a mild steel flux, then most likely you will have some spatter. it really depends on the flux your using, how clean the pieces your welding are, and what speed and temp your using and how well you weld.

there are ways to reduce the spatter, but you cant really get rid of it all. thats just the nature of flux welding. a grinder is a good thing!

as for welding mild steel with mild steel flux, there are ways to really reduce the spatter to vertually nothing (clean metal and quality flux wire and good technique)

stainless is softer than MS anways, the flux splatter sticks better because of it.

What brand of wire do you consider good? I'm useing Hobart brand wire, is that up there in the "good" wire catagory?

ive never used Hobart wire, I have used Harbor Freight, Lowes, Home Depot, Fleet Farm, and Northern Tool and Equipments brand.

I would personally say that the Northern Tool brand and Fleet Farm had better welds with that flux.

the Harbor Freight was by far the crappiest i have used

Lowes and Home Depot were "in the middle"

not sure why you quoted me on this particular statement?

i do agree that when you weld the 304 stainless butt welds you can see it "melt" the SS much easier in the bead during welding

locally, most of the self-shielding stainless wire is NOT self-shielding. it's for dual-shielding.

That means you still have to use the specified gasses with the wire.

i have always used flux core in my welder. a can of anti spatter has made a big difference. just take a wire brush or a flat head to brush the ---- off

anti spatter didnt really do much for me personally. it did seem to "wipe off" a little easier, but it didnt stop spatter.

Its so you can wipe of the spatter. Not prevent it.

Anti-Spatter spray is pretty good stuff. I spray my mig nozzle with it and it keeps it from getting shitted up easily. When it does needle nose pliers break it off spatter very easily.

For the record Hobart=Miller, so yeah I'd consider Hobart or miller welding wire good stuff.
