Friend of mine is a small engine mechanic. He is into pulling though. He runs a Kohler in a murray.

I wouldn't do a single cylinder unless it were an intek. It's hard to find cams for flat head briggs. Intek and vanguard is everywhere. My mower for this year was an 18hp briggs boxer twin. Next year I'll be building up my grandfather's Deere with a kawasaki OHV water cooled with an oil pump and all that crap. It'll be heavy, but reliable as nothing else. OHV is a lot easier to play with.

flathead is too, if you have an end mill and a stable drill press table. just up spindle speed, chuck in the end mill, mill off the raised gasket lip and ~.030 or so more than that. your valves will still clear the head no prob, and compression is up to high 7's over low 6's now.

porting is tricky. the exhaust port has thin casting on the outward edge of the elbow, easy to over-port and make a hole to open air. also porting the cast lines out of the intake and matching them to the gaskets help greatly

that will give you more compression but like any flat head it shields the valves and kills flow. That is why flat heads are gay.

A lot of basic flathead guys run B&S 4-bolt fuel pumps on stock carbs. You can however get performance kart carbs and get them to work, or use Intek/Vanguards on a flathead. Stock Intek carbs are good for most setups, but there are companies that make performance carbs intended for B&S twins. Check out heymow.com for more info.

high octane as much as possible (watch using nitro fuel, it heats up good and you'll diesel after a little bit of hard running) and try to bump compression/port it. easy to port most little 2-strokes once you get them apart, its usually obvious
