Chainsaw engine / Projects *PICS ADDED*

I wanna put a chainsaw engine on a bicycle. What kinda RPM's these things run at? I want to work it out so it has about a 20mph cruise and a max of say 35mph spurts of raw powar.

I don't weight much and it's a 40cc (i think) engine, so hopefully that will be possible.

Re: Chainsaw engine. Working RPM?

get me the model/size of the saw and I'll get the specs from my small engine mech. ;)

Re: Chainsaw engine. Working RPM?

kick ass. I'm pretty sure its a 40cc Poulan but it could be one of the smaller engines. I'll check it out after work though to be sure it's not the 33 or 34cc.

Thanks :)

I have a Stihl, and I think it runs at about 13,500rpm.

i doubt hes going to use a $300 chainsaw to make a minibike ;)

and its not all about the rpm's ;) ;) ;)

Re: Chainsaw engine. Working RPM?

Damnit ---- me I forgot to get that info. I'm sorry, I'll get it for real tonite :-[

Took the saw apart, got the bitch of a clutch off. Realized the headstuds also act as motor mounts...goddamn cheap manufacturing bastards!. I'm gonna have to do some HMT'ery to get this beast to make it work so instead of doing a total hack-job as I had first intended, giving the amount of work to make this work correctly, I might have to spend a little time with it and do it semi-right. That was a long sentence.

Anywho, it should be sweet. Hopefully I'll have it done in a month or so.

HOW BADASS WOULD THIS BE?

Build a lawnmower. All you need to do to make them fast is take the blades off, remove the pulleys, put a big pulley on the motor and a small on on the transaxle (stock is the reverse) then build a tension clutch. After a few days work you have a 35mph lawnmower. That's just to get it going though, you'll soon want to redo the steering, and lower the front down and widen it out, but it's a work in progress. Go find an old 80's Murray, Dynamark, Deere, etc with a Peerless transaxle and an engine 11hp or larger. Shouldn't be more than $100 plus $80 for pulleys and a belt

i've got a ported/polished/raised CR briggs 11hp block doing about 16 17 hp if youre interested

Friend of mine is a small engine mechanic. He is into pulling though. He runs a Kohler in a murray.

Re: Chainsaw engine. Working RPM?

I wouldn't do a single cylinder unless it were an intek. It's hard to find cams for flat head briggs. Intek and vanguard is everywhere. My mower for this year was an 18hp briggs boxer twin. Next year I'll be building up my grandfather's Deere with a kawasaki OHV water cooled with an oil pump and all that crap. It'll be heavy, but reliable as nothing else. OHV is a lot easier to play with.

flathead is too, if you have an end mill and a stable drill press table. just up spindle speed, chuck in the end mill, mill off the raised gasket lip and ~.030 or so more than that. your valves will still clear the head no prob, and compression is up to high 7's over low 6's now.

porting is tricky. the exhaust port has thin casting on the outward edge of the elbow, easy to over-port and make a hole to open air. also porting the cast lines out of the intake and matching them to the gaskets help greatly

What carbs do you guys run and how high can those beasts rev?

that will give you more compression but like any flat head it shields the valves and kills flow. That is why flat heads are gay.

Re: Chainsaw engine. Working RPM?

A lot of basic flathead guys run B&S 4-bolt fuel pumps on stock carbs. You can however get performance kart carbs and get them to work, or use Intek/Vanguards on a flathead. Stock Intek carbs are good for most setups, but there are companies that make performance carbs intended for B&S twins. Check out heymow.com for more info.

high octane as much as possible (watch using nitro fuel, it heats up good and you'll diesel after a little bit of hard running) and try to bump compression/port it. easy to port most little 2-strokes once you get them apart, its usually obvious

Sounds good I'll take the head off today and look at the ports. Dumb question, but should I just make the ports bigger? How much bigger?

.125" is about as thin as you can get the crank, you can go thinner on the head if it's got 1/2" that sleeves into the crank. exhaust ports in the head, along with the intake ports in the head/crank.

Flatheads have significantly better bsfc and detonation resistance than any other engine design. Boost one, or go fist yourself!

alrite bishes. Doin this straight up HMT style. I got a 2 wheel project and the 4 wheel project.

Got some work done today:

Here's the scooter:

Here's the scooter's heart. :awww: I made the part that will come in contact with the tire out of some bushings and JBWeld:
http://67.33.14.41/cart/cart2.jpg

On to the cart:

The rear axle (Stock)

Got the new sprocket tacked on, one new wheel temporarily on:
http://67.33.14.41/cart/cart5.jpg

Throttle lever for the cart. free and effective
http://67.33.14.41/cart/cart6.jpg

Mocked up rear axle on frame with risers installed
http://67.33.14.41/cart/cart7.jpg

Damn thats close. Good thing I have yet to put air in the tires

Well guys i'm officially an idiot. Im sitting here at work thinking about the power transfer on the cart and realized I welded the small gear onto the chainsaw clutch itself and not the flywheel. Oh damn am I stupid. Hopefully it's not too FUBAR and I can "unweld" it and do it properly. :1

Re: Chainsaw engine / Projects *PICS ADDED*

For our high mileage cars in HS we used a tapered cone on the crankshaft and bolted the motor on a plate with tubes welded to the bottom, it would slide on smaller tubes to make the engine move so the tire would come in contact with the bigger or smaller part of the cone, the point on the outside to get us going and move it into the big part to get some speed, these things could really haul ass sometimes close to 50 mph at road america. thats movin when ur crunched up in a car that weighs less than 100 lbs. oh yeah we got 580 miles per gallon with that bitch.
