other then a FMU, what options do I have that aren't in the thousands? I'm guessing hondata and uberdata wont work for a non-honda. Which options work with all cars? What about afc 'hack' ?

I've been told I can use a SMT6 on my car. It goes for around 500dollars. Also people tell me megasquirt, but they tell me it's a lot harder to use. I kind of want something simply to use, install and tune. I don't need anything speical, (thousands of dollars), just something that can control fuel to a decent level and maybe retard timing.

Some more info on SAFC and megasquirt? Pricing? Anything up to about 600dollars is my limit (sorry that's the most I want to spend on this).


Remember, the money amount and the simply-ness is key.

Edit: this is going on a m50 bmw engine, OBD-I, it has no map sensor or anything that disable fuel when it sees boost. Uses a HMF (maf).

SAFC and SMT work like crap on AFM Toyotas, they are both piggyback and just influence signals to the OEM ECU, I personally know of folks that went with the SMT and ended up never being able to get the car running right, then switched to Megasquirt and had the car running good in minutes.

Megasquirt is very easy, probably easier to install than alot of commercial standalone, if you have any troubles the folks on the forum are very helpful as long as u are respectful, remember they are just users like you and I, not paid employees, afterall, it's just opensource, nobody is making alot of money on it (www.msefi.com)

Anymore opinons? I don't think Megasquirt is within my budget and it looks damn to hard to use. :P

I think I want to go with a piggyback system, it seems easier to use. All I really need it for is to tune fuel and maybe timing.

ive also heard of woes getting the smt-6 properly set up, most people give up on it before they succeed.

however for those that ive seen take the time to set it up and get it going, they've had great success with it.

also, perfect power will be releasing the smt7 soon, and they also have the full standalones too like the prs4 and prs8, prs 4 only has 4 outputs (can only do 4 cylinder, but the prs8 can do 4-8 cylinders)

After more searching he came across a large discussion about the SMT-6 as a piggy back controller for the larger fuel injectors, after about 3mths of participating in the discussion Johnny decided to purchase the SMT-6, even though there was lots of criticism toward the product in that it has not worked right several people (at the time).
