Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

i want to get into street tuning. i am buying all the stuff i need now to build ecus, tune, ect. i actually been reading alot of this info over the past 3 years and only retained about 3% of it. i am more of a hands on person. i have just about abandoned every other car forum, HMT is my new home. i basically made this thread to keep track of all my questions and to log my progress.

i am trying to keep this thread work safe!

i recently brought this innovate #3781 xd-16 standalone wideband kit.

i hope this was a good deal. the guy wanted $250 but i offered him $200. its new in the box. i guess its been opend a few times and was on display in his store. i checked ebay and seen they where going for $400 there so i fugred it was a good deal.

what you think?

is everything there?

am i understanding this correctly, this unit replaces the burn1 and ostrach and puts them both into one unit?if so is it compatable as a ostrich 2? i am going to order this from xenocron with some others stuff, but just want to get an opininon on it first
http://www.-------------/catalog/apu1...ion-p-140.html

or am i just better off buying the starter kits

i guess ill just splurge and get a crom pro licance while i am at it.

you wana know the real messed up part, i dont even know how to use this thing, but ill learn. whats the difference between this set up withthe gauge, and the one that has the screen.

any links on introductions to widebands?

Read the manual; it's on that cd and also on their website. That's the best way to learn.

$200 isn't bad, but I still think the lc-1 + o-meter combo from xenocron is better. For a bit more, I got that + 3 sst chips + ssi-4.

The 'manual' is comes with is good, but the pdf on the website/cd-rom is great. The program it comes with is tits too, especially with the SSi-4. I can datalog the afr's on virtually any car with the MAP & rpm inputs on the ssi-4.

i was starting a new thread, but decided i should just merge it with this one, so i got a few questions at the top of the page. i got about 3 grand left and i still need to get my welder, and some tuning stuff, so i am trying to get just the stuff i need.

thanks for the info guys

No one was selling a full XD16 kit w/ LC-1 for less than $200...HA!

I would say that the XD16 is a great wideband for PERMANENT install...but not for tuning multiple cars.

The LM-1 is a better unit for taking from car to car...

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

In reality you really shouldnt start charging for tuning until you have atleast 10+ cars under your belt. If its your run of the mill set up you will be fine but the big power/injector set ups I would turn down until you have spent time on a dyno. Then inturn go to the track to see how the cars perform. In reality your proably better off parting out cars sadly.

The honda market is very small and poor. I would focus on welding more than ecu's.

I've never used the one you have but the main difference is that the LM-1 has the wideband controller, display, and datalogger all in one portable unit. It's about the size of a big ass gameboy and is great because it's very portable. The unit you have is very nice and will do the job perfectly but is meant for permanent install, it would be more of a pain in the ass to move it from car to car.

keep the advice comming. i dont plan on tunning anyone outside my circles car anytime soon. my first pratice will be on my obd1 ef hatch. its a minin me that i am going turbo. i also got my galant that i am going to start playing with dsmlink on.

i kept wondering what that gameboy thing was. i might have to go ungrade to that kit while i can.

so what about the burner/ostrach thing.

i can only assume because of the gague set up my kit has, its meant to be mounted. unlike the otherone with the square box remote thingie

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

I use a m-300, its real easy to move, I got a cirarette adapter that I plug in the car i'm in and power it with that, just crack the window for the sensor wire, splice into the ecu signal wire and ur ready to rock. Maybe there are easier units out there, I've never really heard any good feedback on good units for going car-car with.

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

I dislike the xd16 because of price and the gauge. Moving it from car to car would be a pain. I got the o-meter because it was so small, and I can use suction cups to temp mount it onto the windshield. When you're street tuning, eyes on the road is #1, everything else is #2.

I'd also suggest you get an SSI-4. It can accept pressure sensors, can read almost any ignition (to get RPM signal), and therefore you can use it with ---- like carb'd cars very accurately. Thats the other reason I got that combo - my 67 bird has some POS 870cfm carb on a sbc, and sucks ass when it comes to response. But nothings cooler than hesitating during a launch and instantly transitioning to a massive burnout. :y

Agreed. The LC-1 unit is good for permanent install, but the LM-1 is best for moving from car to car. I guess you could try putting a cig lighter plug on the power wires for the LC-1 if you really wanted to try it, still gonna be a pita though.

so last nite i cameto the realization that i totaly suck at desoldering. i am using one of those radioshack bulb style desolders. i am looking at getting a good one, just lost on what to get. do they have all in one units that will suck up the solder and spit out good solder when i got to put chips in? i totally suck at all aspects of soldeing 100%, worse than spelling and grammer!

i was looking at some hakko desoldering stations on ebay, but there are just soo many different ones.

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

hey thats the desoldering iron I use. They work good you just need to take a dremel tool and file the tip down a little smaller and they work great ive chipped quite a few ecu's using that same rig.

yeah, but i am looking for a unit to do soldering and deolsdering. i almost brought this $500 unit last nite, but i dont want to buy some total crap. oh well, i guess you live and learn

danz 01-07-2008 05:26 AM

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

i was able to use that same sucker style iron... that tip to file down the end is a really good idea... im gonna give it a try

oh and you gotta let that fucker heat up for like an hour before you use it... it will work good for ya then

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

Desoldering boards is such a pain in the ass. I got an ECU off a guy for $20. When I got it back to my place I realized why, he soldered wires into the datalogging holes and broke the wires off. That ---- took me like 2 hours to clean out completely. I was using a pump thingy to desolder. You push down on the plunger to load it, then push a button to release it and it sucks up in one burst. Works decently, but it was hell trying to hold the ecu, iron, and desolder thingy all at once.

Except mine was orange and black.

Yeah, tune your car first, its alot harder then people think especially when its your first. You will run into many questions and for me i have no one to physically ask so i get all my answers on here. You gotta train your ears. Check out as many pics of plugs, learn to read them.... you need to get a good magnifine glass or one of those type you can see down inside the plug. Got patients, you will need it. Mistune someone elses car and you will be married to it. READ READ READ!!!!!!!!!!!! I have read so much lately i think i gotta get some glasses. :o

I can't desolder for ---- with those. :3

I use the old school method. Desolder braid ftw!

I can desolder/chip and ecu in 40 minutes. Not bad for desoldering braid.

well, i am only about 2 hours into my first ecu, lol. not really, but it seems like that, and i havent even finisahed the desolder part. i am going to radio shack to get some braid to see how that works out

+1, I tried a bulb type sucker, then one jsut like pictured above and they both blew.
desolder braid works nice, if you don't get it all the first try, drip a little new solder into the hole and retry

short of a real desolder station which i've never used, braid is the best.

i went to raido shack, and i got somd braid, ill test it out in an hours when this stupid desolder iron heats up

but on a side note, i got my burn1 today and a couple of chip kits. so i am going to finish up this ecu and test it out, ill keep yall updated on how it works

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

i THINK i got my burn1 set up correctly.

http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/1797/correcthi0.jpg

now i am starting on putting together my first ecu.

i desoldered the 28 pin 27256 socket and dip, zip and unburned eeprom
i also desoldered other 20 pin 74hc373 socket and installed the proper chip
i desoldered the c51 ans c52 and installed the resistors
i desoldered the holes for the j1 jumper, but my pin dosent fit, so ill have to solder it new arms
i desoldered r54 and installed the resistor
the ecu was automatic so i removed rp18 and rp17, and added a wire to rp18
i desoldered the 1-4 holes for the 4 pin header. i left the 5th hole soldered and inserted the header

during my research i read something about if i am using crome, to remove the resistor from j12, so i did.
i also have one cap that came with the ecu kit from xenocron that i am lost on. i reread the install instructions on the pgmfi wiki but i think i might be skiping over it thinking i already put it somewhere. its a brown round type resistr with a silver top with what looks loke a mercedes symbol. it reads 35v 220uf kze

is there anything else i am forgetting. i know i still need to purn a bin to the chip

Re: Turbo Vic's failed attempt at becoming a tuner research thread SFW

i vouch for braid, i watch tim do it.
