SST chips no good or is it just me

I've been trying to use the SST 27SF512 chips from Xenocron and three out of three are giving me errors... are these simply bad chips or what? ::) I'm using willem btw.
Am now on the lookout for some AT29C256 chips...

i had two bad chips from xenocron not long ago as well, bought two from moates and problem solved... maybe he has a bad batch or there getting damaged during shipping somehow

now even with the new chips it doesnt matter what changes i make to any map, idle is uber rich, and above about 3000 its lean as hell

yes, 8000

I was able to program one, but after a couple of times it crapped out. I'm thinking the AT29c256 are more solid/reliable

they're also more discontinued.

personally ive burned and re-burned more SST chips than i can count, without ever having a problem. I don't for one second doubt their capability or reliability

oh, and im also burning with a willem.

my barrowed willems doesnt like sst's at all, i use 29's and its fiine

Cray91 08-21-2006 02:36 PM

Re: SST chips no good or is it just me

I use both on a regular basis without problem. the offset should be 080000. But you had burned one in the past, so that probably isn't it.

FooK 08-21-2006 02:39 PM

Re: SST chips no good or is it just me

are you changing the yellow jumper and erasing them properly before each burn? and watching the erase process to make sure the progress bar doesnt start over at all?

HMTguy 08-21-2006 03:08 PM

Re: SST chips no good or is it just me

Cray I think you put an extra 0 in there.

I've been burning them with my Willem for a while now, and have only encountered one bad chip.

Make sure you set the jumper for erase and erase the chip every time before you burn it. Don't forget to set the jumper back to burn before burning.

Re: SST chips no good or is it just me

I use SST 27SF512's exclusively with my willems. in fact i lost all of mine but one so this one has been reburnt a ---- ton

How I get them to burn right every time

Move erase jumper to erase and go into the software and erase

Make sure offset is set to 8000 and clear the cache, and make sure jumper is set to normal. Remove the jumper that is above the zif socket, and press the button to the right of it until the led on the far right is lit up

load your bin and hit the burn button. i think at this point a dialog box comes up.. hit ok. then put the jumper back in and it should burn

Agreed, I have both, and I only bought the Burn1 because I got frustrated using the Willem. I've kept it around simply because it burns 27c256s.

I move one jumper one spot over to switch from burn to erase...doesn't seem like that much of a hassle to me. I only have to burn the chip once for each car I tune. In 3 years it hasnt become a hassle at all, and paid for itself time and time again. Maybe the Burn1 is easier to use or whatever, but I have seen no indications of a Willem being a hassle or frustrating, so I can't really see a reason to switch. The damn thing is so easy to use a retarded monkey could do it. Alll these dipshits have problems cause they don't read the setup stuff that comes on the CD.

I do a lot of GM stuff with my Burn 1. I back read lots of GM ---- so changing the chip designation and offset is a constant thing.

Yeah I agree, if you're Willem works fine and all you're using it for is burning one chip, then perfect.

I don't have a romulator, and I needed something I could plug into the laptop easily.

I have the willems also, it is easy once you understand how to use it. Someone ganked a 29c256 right out of my car! is there any place you know of that still sells them?

I wish it would auto set the offsets for ya. Would make some of the stuff easier, no real complaints though. Much easier than a willem.

If you're using a Willem, a pop up "pops up" and tells you which jumpers to change.

if you are using a WILLEM

http://www.-------------/install/Willem-SST.htm

if you are using a BURN1, just skip the second step

Make sure your computer doesn't have something else like an extra printer or something installed to the port your using for the burner.

My Willem board is a little different, but here is what works for me...

http://www.turbols.net/TechInfo/27SF512.html

There may be a simpler way, but this is what I've had a lot of success with.
