what do you think about no battery at all? i have heard of burning up alternators cause they work too hard with no battery, kinda like over spinning a turbo when you have a big boost leak.

i dont know if thats true though. i have never run a car long with no battery. only long enough to see if the engine would die to diagnose a bad alternator with no tools

I don't think it burns up anything.

I advise against it. If you stall the vehicle, with the small battery you can at least roll the car off.

when i worked at pizza hut 9 years ago we had a driver that needed a new battery. he had someone jump his car in the morning and drove it around all day with no battery. he just kept the car running the whole time.

If it is a gm car the CS and CSD type alternators burn themselves up regularly with a battery in the vehicle. Running without a battery in these cars not a good idea.
Hopefully you are alking about a honda.

No, we're discussing a 1932 Hupmobile.

have you ever thought about an alternator kill switch? less drag on the engine might be worth more at the strip than the weight savings

just an idea, so go ahead and flame away if you want

some circle track cars use a 16 v system where the vehicle runs off a 16v battery but w/o alternator the idea is with battery low it will still have 12v output.
But I think honda ecu's have input voltage from alternator if memory serves me right.

I guess I will check into what real race cars do and copy that. The alternator kill swith makes sense, but I wonder where I would get more benefit. The engine would still be turning the alt so it would only remove the load of charging. I think removing 20lbs might be better.
