sevral times ive wanted to buy equipment instead of pay a tuner but when it all comes down to it, it just seems like to much info and my a.d.d. kicks in and i end up going the easy way

Not all of the Big Dog tuners are snobby on here, you have to realize that they are very busy...people pay them good money to do what they do. And even though you might have the programs, the burners, the kits etc., they're pretty much useless without at least a wideband to go along with it. 
The rest of it pretty much boils down to math and trial and error on the street/dyno to see what works.
