How do you tune for timing retard?
I am currently running a D15b7 with a teo4h on 10 lbs, I have the ignition retard set at .9, now that I have my afr's tuned I would like to know how you tune the timing, I've heard the best way is to check the spark plugs, but what do you look for. When I pulled out my wideband o2 sensor (about 25 inches down the downpipe) it was comletely black, what does this mean.

then its not really safe to tune the timing. super black buidup on your wb sensor means you're rich, but thast normal since you're boosted.
you can make your own knock sensing device, but you wont really know where you're making power or losing until you do it on a dyno.

you can tune timing until you start to hear detonation then back off a couple degrees, but using a dyno allows you to see where the increases in timing actually benefit and add power. there is usually a buffer zone in which additional timing nets no increase in power and, in a lot of cases, is prior to detonation.
basically, you should leave tuning timing to the dyno.

To street tune and get in the ballpark for gains use an EGT. It can be worth the investment. A dyno is the best way but just by checking egt increases you can get damn close without a dyno. Lean is mean rich is a bitch.

you wont hear pinging at wot at 12 psi you'll hear a cracked ringland though
Your best bet is the egt but if it runs solid dont ---- with it
