Default Do i really need a MSD igntion?

Hey guys, I was wondering if i were to boost 11 psi without a MSD ignition using VAFC. Will my JDM B16a SiR II motor last?

And what is a boost retard? What do i need to buy?
I am not clear about this. Anyone explain to me? Thanks!

do you mean the msd ignition that makes more volts of spark and crap?
if so the answer is no.

or do you mean a msd boost timing master that retards per lb of boost then the answer is maybe.

if you can run the setup without pinging then its fine. but if you ping then you should do some timeing retard.

you can just crank back the distrib or get a msd btm, it is up to you.

Yes. There are 2 different BTM's, one for MSD ignitions (you have to have the MSD ignition box to use it), or the one for use with stock ignitions. MSD part #5462 works with stock ignitions. P/N#8762 works only with MSD ignitions. If you want to buy an MSD ignition, I'll sell you my BTM for $100, BTW. Hope this helps.

for 11psi i would suggest both. Need to get a good spark at that pressure.

There are 2 different ways to retard timing during boost with the MSD ignition - one is with the BTM reads boost from your manifold pressure and will retard timing say 1 deg per 2 psi of boost. but that add on is like another $350.00 on top of the $350 for the Ignition itself new prices of course( i am basing this on a non-distributer ignition)

The second way is to use the timing retard feature on the ignition. with this you can retard timing based on RPM's

Example: say you start to spool 2 psi at 3000 rpm - you can set the timing back 2 deg at 3000 rpm and so on. IT (the MSD DIS-2) has a 2 stage rev limit mine is set at 3500 rpm so when i go to the track and stage i can floor it and my RPM's wont go over 3500 until i let off the brake - well sort of but you get the idea - then you can also change your redline RPM too.

Lots of other helpful features like the newest version lets you make changes with a laptop - old version uses DIP switches.

Anyway FWIW I hope that helps.

Be carfull and put your car on a wideband 02 if you have the money - just cause' you can't hear the detonation doesn't mean it's not there. that will also give you the best idea of how to retard the timing.
