Default check valves and FMU's?

i know the purpose behind a FMU, but what do check valves/ missing kinks accomplish? i hear everyone using them who are using FMU's, but i need someone to explain the concept....i've looked here and haven't found any info yet as to there function... :1

they bleed off boost so the map sensor doesn't see it and throw a CEL

I didn't think they bled off boost, I thought that when the boost reaches a certain level, they close a valve. Do they really vent boost to atmosphere?

no they let boost out, they open a valve in boost that bleeds off the pressure

Check valves work pretty decent, bleeding off positive pressure so the MAP sensor doesn't read it; therefore, keeping the ECU happy. I'm only using two on my setup right now, and haven't thrown a CEL.
