LG LCD Monitors for CHEAP! Great for DIY projectors and of course computers...

Introduction
Hello, I work at LG Electronics and can get monitors at employee prices. These monitors are great if you're doing a DIY projector. I've been wanting to build one for quite a while but never had a place to get a decently priced LCD panel. I will update on this thread which monitors have been tested. If you've torn apart any of the monitors, please keep me updated on any FFC issues so I can warn any buyers. If you would like to learn more about a DIY projector, check out www.lumenlab.com/forums.

Televisions
I cannot get tvs to sell, sorry. For those who have already asked me about them, I'll still try but don't hold your breath. TVs are hard to get because most of them are sold to people who bribe or have connections. Also I can only get one TV a month and am purchasing two 50" plasmas for the apartment, so it will be a while before I even have TVs to sell. Usually when I do get televisions, I sell them locally because I can ask higher prices than from internet users, and don't have to worry about shipping.

Monitors
They do not come with manuals; they come with a vga and power cable. They all have DVI-D and VGA inputs unless stated otherwise. None of the monitors have any other inputs. These monitors are refurbished which means there was a reason they were returned and they cannot be sold to public again. The defects could be anything from dead/stuck pixel(s), scratches on the screen or plastic around it, light leakage, or mura zones. So far I haven't had any monitors fail out of over 30 screens.

Prices
I was using flat-rate prices for the monitors, but I think it would be more better for everyone if I offered the monitors at different prices. It isn't too fair to sell one person a nearly perfect monitor for the same price as someone that got one with more defects. Unfortunately the sale ends with the new year, so prices will go up a little from what they were originally. I am trying to keep them as low as possible.

Shipping
I used to just charge flat rate for monitors, but now I will get a quote and add it to the monitor price separately. I'm doing this because I noticed some packages were only about $10 to ship while others were over $25. I ship using UPS and package in bubble wrap and peanuts.

Defects
Here's a list of possible defects and their descriptions. Whenever I buy monitors, they have a post-it attached that tells the defects that were found. I also run my own short test by filling the screen with different colors to check for scratches and dead/stuck pixels. I use a black screen to look for light leakage, and a grey screen to check for mura issues.

Light Leakage: This is basically light "leaking" from the edges of the monitor. Honestly, it's usually only barely noticeable on darker screens, which is why I use a black screen to look for them. If you plan on using the screen for a projector, it won't be a problem since the backlight isn't used.

Dead/Stuck Pixel: This is where one or more pixels is "stuck" on a specific color. If you google "fix stuck pixel" you can find software that attempts to fix it, but I'm not sure how well the programs work. A dead pixel is one that isn't on. It's just black. Most monitors don't have a dead/stuck pixel, but the few that did only had one stuck pixel.

Scratch: Self-explanatory. I will tell you whether the scratches are on the screen or the surrounding plastic case.

Mura Zones: These are interesting. They are the hardest to recognize defect and along with light leakage is the most common defect. They are defined as regions of low contrast and ununiform brightness. The only "accurate" way to find these are with cameras and various algorithms, because "inspection results tend to depend on the operator." Worst cases you'll see a spot that looks shaded or like a smudge on the screen. Most of the time you can't even notice them. Again, this is backlight dependant defect, so if you're using it for a projector it won't affect the performance.

What's Available
These are the specifications of the monitors I can possibly get. If something catches your eye, please post what you're interested in. Try not to PM me unless you have something you need to discuss. I'm not trying to be an ass but my inbox gets full way too quick and sometimes people that need to reach me regarding their sale cannot.

How to Buy
In the past, I tried to write everyone's name down and keep up with who wanted what. The problem is, there are way more people interested in monitors than I anticipated, and when I get something that someone wants, they change their mind or cannot be reached. Please subscribe to this thread if you are interested in purchasing something. Whenever I get monitors (1-2 times weekly) I will simply edit this main post and post that I have new monitors. You will receive an email that there's a new post, and it'll either be me or someone else. If you'd rather not be spammed with that :P then just check here daily.

I will post at the bottom of the thread what I have for sale. If you see something you want, PM me and we'll set up the sale. Please don't pay me before I have the monitors! If you have a question, please ask in the thread and I'll answer so everyone with the same question will know the answer :) I have removed the paypal to prevent it in the future. I'm not worried about not getting the monitor, I just don't like sitting around with someone's money! A couple of you have already cleared payments with me for monitors I don't have, but I promise as soon as I get them they'll be shipped out. Won't even be posted below ;)

For Sale!

  • $90 + shipping - One stuck green pixel

FFC
Here I'll list the monitors that do/don't have FFC issues. If you're wondering what an FFC is, it's the extremely thin flat flexible cables that connect the screens to the boards. Be very careful to not break these when taking apart a monitor.

Cool

Modified the thread so the pictures show up...

I'm selling two 42" LCD monitors so we can upgrade to some 50"s ... Selling for $750 in the paper, would sell them here but I doubt anyone wants to pay shipping on the mugs.

BTW, www.lumenlab.com/forums is a great place for info on DIY projectors :)

Re: LG LCD Monitors for CHEAP! Great for DIY projectors and of course computers

93z6t - the monitors can't, except for the ones above 20". Your best bet would be to look up the model number with google and it'll tell you if they have tv tuners or not :) My 42" is a monitor, doesn't have a tuner or speakers, but can be used as a tv with an external satellite/cable/hd receiver. I can ship but shipping isn't cheap.

snm95ls - let me know, I have some for sale

baker_jeff - I can get a 20" shipped to canada at any time, I just bought two 20" widescreens for myself today :)

tribb333 - sorry but I usually sell the larger panels for $750 locally. I will let you know if any good deals come up though

Can't beat those prices! Who will you use for shipping (Fed Ex, UPS, etc.)?

Jorsher 12-15-2006 09:40 PM

Re: LG LCD Monitors for CHEAP! Great for DIY projectors and of course computers

ghettoturbo - to be honest, nothing is available right now. Reason is because I'm in the market for two 50" plasmas and i can only get one tv a month....not to mention its a pain in the ass to get tvs.. There are already about 6 people looking for stuff. What size do you consider "decent"

seajary - ups , unless you ask otherwise

L1952TQ - The black ones on the left. 19" 4:3 12ms 1280x1024 1400:1. The msrp is around $250 and I'm selling them for $125 shipped.

is there any dead pixles on this one?

Jorsher 12-16-2006 12:43 AM

Re: LG LCD Monitors for CHEAP! Great for DIY projectors and of course computers...

Nah it won't have one. It might even have 8ms response instead of 12ms.

Let me know. I'll be getting more monday and shipping tuesday.

like a 27 widescreen minimum...im a noob to this ---- too, if it doesnt have a tuner could i hook up a dvd player to this mofo?(what sort of inputs do they have) since i watch more movies than tv anyway

Jorsher 12-16-2006 01:50 PM

Re: LG LCD Monitors for CHEAP! Great for DIY projectors and of course computers

Yeah my 42" monitors don't have tuners, but I have my satellite receiver and 360 and ---- hooked up to it. Doesn't have speakers either so everything is ran through the home theater.

I'll see what I can do but just understand it could take some time. Anything up to 20" widescreens I can get EASY. Everything else is a pain in the ass, there are a lot more employees than tvs. I'll let you know.

hehehe who knows...i do like the tobacco

jmunk: they're refurbed. Customer returns to store for whatever reason, they're returned to lg, if they have no problems they're sent back to the store, if they have a problem (led out, scratch, pixel, etc) they'll fix it and sell to us. Most of the crap i can't find anything wrong with (and i've looked). We have 5 lcd monitors and two 42" lcd tvs in our apartment...and are gonna use another lcd for a projector and sell the 42" so we can replace them with 50" plasmas...i've sold over 30 of their products and haven't had a problem with anything :-P Worst case, it'll have a stuck pixel or two, or will have a scratch on the plastic somewhere...most times there isn't a single thing wrong. Let me know if you want anything.

can you do a combo deal for a couple of the monitors? interested in one of those 20" ones in the back and one of the 19" ones on the left. shipped to 97304

curoius what the circle looking thing is on that 20" one near the Start button area on the screen?

ghettoturbo - i'll do that but most likely it'll be a looong time before i can get one, next on my list is two 50" plasmas and it'll probably take me forever to get those. i'm in north alabama

tribb333 - yeah i can do that, for the 20 and 19 i can do 265 shipped. While testing they write on the screens and ----, there might have been a backlight out there or something i dont know, i've been using the monitors and will keep them (can get more) and haven't seen a problem in the past week of use. It wipes off with a paper towel
