Yeah i go through it very carefully.... pretty much just removing the carbon thats been caked on their... I dont use stone abrasives in that area.. because they tend to remove too much base material... as you mentioned 1 little ---- up and its bye bye valve seat, but i do remove the valve and give them a thourough clean up... nothing drastic... but still i would recomend a 3 angle valve job to everyone after i do this as to gaurantee its affectiveness

right, having worked as a mechanic AND a machineist (was actually trained in all aspects of engineering.. welding and fab, sheet metal work, electrical, machining etc) in the past i would never trust some "mmm shiny" gimp to touch anything of mine,

RUNNING A FLAP WHEEL DOWN THE PORTS AND PAINTING IT DOESNT GIVE POWER

brain cell

do it right first time, machine shops charge because they have massive overheads and have to pay the wages of skilled and experienced workers

on another note.

inlet ports should be slightly rough, and NEVER polished as the uber smooth surface causes fuel droplets to cling to the port walls and drop out of suspension, whereas a slightly rough finish gives turbulance which both keeps a "buffer" of air between the mixture and the port walls and enables the mixture to mix better in the port runners

He is right about the intake ports... On my intake ports I used a 50 grit whipitie. to give it some good turbulence. I polished the ---- out of my exhaust ports though.. It was like a damn mirror.

I am by no means a professional cylinder head porter. I just did the same thing as Punk_E_booster did.. just clean up the ports etc etc. Their is a huge science in head porting, especially on NA cars. but since most of us are working with FI cars, any type of cylinder porting cannot really hurt performance.

That dude just pissed me off... sorry if I went on a rant... But he acts like i dont know what im doing... I mean I bought a Standard Abrasives Porting Kit and the video becuase i wanted this ---- done to my car. and I was quoted 350$ at this one machine shop. I baught the parts and the video for less than 100. I watched the video.. and did it just the way it said.. came out good... hasnt given me ---- since... I mean I did this just to gain a few extra horses... but this guy probably thinks were fixn em run em in NASCAR or NIRA or something... ----... if people are interested fine... If not well take it to a machine shop and spend more money.... im not gonna lie to you.... they will probably do a way better job than I can (im man enough to admit that) but theyre gonna charge you an arm and a leg... But thats if your dead fuckn seriouse about performance... if your looking for a cheap horsepower gain... well than hit me up.

It's understandable... there are many people who do half assed jobs... just to make a profit and dont give a ---- what people say about their work as long as they get paid... I do this as a hobby... its something I like doing... working on things... taking something thats broken and fixing it.. or taking something thats normal and making it better.... its what i love to do... If i had the time and the resources i would probably do it for free... but i dont so I cant... but I think that 80$ is a resonable price. People spend around 200 bucks on headers, when their engine can only pump out so much exhaust

theres nothing wrong with what you are doing, its just a thorough de-coke of the head, i just think its a bit misleading to call it a port job...

now if i were to offer this service (which i wont, ive had enough of working on cars for other people bar my friends.. in which case i work for free) i would take the head into work, skim it recut the valve seats and lap in the valves.. probably waist the valve stems a little and smooth the back of the valve face.
then tidy up the ports (btw, knife edgeing the join of the intake ports is a BAD idea, as a slight radius is actually better for air flow) fit new collets and vsos, balance the ports up using a burette (good way to lower CR if low comp pistons are out of your price range) then paint it and give it back...

to go any further into head mods you really have to know engine specs, intended use etc etc... (which is why off-the-shelf ported heads are gay)
