so i have to move, getting kicked out of my house and cali is to damn expensive to live. so im looking at moving to colorado to work for my dad.
ive worked for him for 4 years almost now. ive gotten maybe a 2 dollar raise, im still just a gopher for everyone, do everything. the only ---- im kind of specialized in is hyster forklift repair(ceritfied, but never used), and dock lok and dock leveler repair and maintnence.
my sister, who has no experience in anything but dental hygiene has had a company given to her by my dad and runs her own ---- after maybe 2 years of being upper managment.
my whole life i just wanted to take over his buisness, but im getting the feeling that this is never going to happen and im going to be 35 years old and he will sell the buisness out from under me and then im stuck with 13 or so yrs of experince in "maintenance".

or i can join the marines. kill things, blow ---- up, get room and board. travel. and if i get out hopefully have a nice size nest egg to start my own construction buisness.
down side is i will be definetly infantry, so i could die. or be horribly maimed.


any input from people in the military is greatly appreciated.

 

First off I'm not in the military, and I appreciate everything the men and women do over there. I'm not totally against it, in fact I had joined the Navy at beginning of '07, but I had a kid and I couldn't imagine voluntarily leaving him behind to go traipsing through some other God forsaken country. I'm rambling... anyways, if I were in your position... no ties, no responsibilities to anyone, I would definitely have to sign up for some branch of the military. Last I heard (read: in Jan 07') Navy job title Master-at-Arms was offering me $20k bonus for signing up in DEP program or delayed enlistment program. Whatever you decide THINK ABOUT IT THOROUGHLY!!!! IT TOOK ME AWHILE AND SOME SERIOUS NINJA MOVES TO GET OUT MY ENLISTMENT INTO THE NAVY.

 

isn't the age limit for enlisted 24 years old in the marine corps? i could be wrong and should prob search lol

- Make a deal with dad. Work for him, ask him to pay for college for a business degree, once the degree is complete, and grades are maintained, you are to get management or ownership path for the company.

- Do not join the Marines or Army, to avoid infantry mess. Join Air Force instead, hold out for a technical, engineering, or specialist position in a field you desire. Go to college while you are in the service, they pay with GI Bill. Don't get caught up in partying too much. Complete college in your career field, get out of Air Force with degree and four years experience. Even if you don't attend college, you can still get an Airframe and Powerplant certification, and work at any airport in the nation.

- Or have no plan, be a grunt, shoot and kill people, and have nothing to show for it when you get out.

I fixed this quote for you. I am not anti-military, but I do not like the way our vets are treated once they are no longer of any use to the military. These guys risk their lives for our country and then when they need us, we turn our backs on them.

If you want to have sex with a man in uniform, there are easier ways to get that without signing up.

 

If you decide to go into the military don't be a ------- idiot. Choose a job that can translate to something in the civilian world. There are many technical fields in the military that can open a lot of doors for you when you get out.

 

I'm just gonnna say don't even try it since you're hell bent on being Rambo. When me and my friend enlisted, he chose Infantry because he wanted to be the one playing rambo.

Long story short, he hated it because of all of the additional physical training and all the hiking and ---- they had to do with all the heavy *** equipment.

Basically if you're gonna go, don't go as Infantry because you're gonna go in thinking you'll get to kill people and it'll be like the movies and all that ----....but once you're there hauling around heavy *** equipment every day for a long period of time and long distances, you're gonna think about this post and think "that dude was right."

I got made fun of a lot in boot camp for my MOS, same thing with my other friend who just left a year ago as Admin...but our experiences after boot camp were a lot better than a grunt's in my eyes.

Besides, every Marine is a rifleman.

 

i can understand what you guys are saying. i dont want to play rambo, its anything but a game, but i dont see any reason to join the military to get training in a civilian job. i can learn that stuff outside of the military.
if i joined i would want the extra training and hardships, otherwise i would continue doing what i do.
im good at building ----, and i can learn it working for my dad, or at some other job i dont need the military to show me that.
school was never for me, i learn better with my hands than with a book and bullshit homework assignments.
