a little window into how toyota 22r's make 400k miles on the clock:

motor was orig head gasket from what i could tell, dunno how this happened. #3 cyl
397,xxx on the odometer, truck ran like a champ. pistons were soo strong, they held the ring in the ring groove long enough for DDing to compress the ring into 2 layers in stock groove thickness
the peppering on top of the piston is purely done by ring sharapnel, the valves and combustion chamber had a similar fate.
Goddamn, that's some long lasting engine. I often wonder how long a well maintained honda would last, but they usually get beat on, wrecked, or soon turbocharged...
the nice thing about toyotas are that they are over built from the factory 22r,4age,7m(not conting head gasket),1jz,2jz all have heavyduty parts(for the applications) so they live a long time and take a pretty good beating also the reason toyotas have generally cost more than other import brands in the past
