I'm putting in a set of used 10:1 srp pistons next weekend, with the engine in the car. First question is: Do I need to take the stock piston/rod assemblies to a machine shop to have it taken apart and have the stock rods put on the srp's? The manual says I need to, but sometimes they feed you bs, so i dunno. I have a torque wrench, 3 stone hone, ring tool, ring compressor, and am borrowing a timing light-- is there any other specialized tools I will need? Care to give me any advice to a first timer? I just want my car to run good again. I just deturbo'd it until I build a new kit, and there was probably a half quart of oil in my charge pipes from the fucked rings in cylinder 2.

If you are reusing the OEM rods, then yes you will need to swing by a machine shop to have them pressed.
If you ask, alot of places will just press them while you wait, it only takes them a few minutes.

ouch, everyone learns somewhere, and wayy more people post in general than over there. Anything else guys? Its kinda scurry pulling apart an engine for the first time. Should I replace the rod bearings while they're out? and how much do I need to worry about clearances-- can I just reasonably assume they will be ok? (I have no tools to check this stuff, but I could prolly borrow them if needed)

 

Rod bearings are for ricers. Just use two pieces of bologna, works every time.

 

dude are you sure about bologna? I heard that the air/meat ratio is too high in those, and going with something more dense and fatty like ham will be better because its naturally lubricated

 

Only you would know if the bearings are worn or damaged by inspecting them. If youre doing a rebuild do it right.
