I need some assembly tips.

Flange (3/8’’ mild steel) was tack welded on a square beam prior to do major assembly work. The flanged warped enough so that now I can’t fit it on the head.

I found a dummy head, so on my next fab, I’ll install the flange on the head and weld on it directly.

From your experience, what is the best procedure to prevent flange warp while fabricating log manifold, must I wait log to cool completely down between each weld pass (hope not)? Can I do it all in one shot if the flange is fixed soundly to the head? Must I start from center and go toward each side symmetrically?

Welder used: 230V MIG wire 0.023, all carbon steel schedule 40 1.5’’ piping

 

5/8" thick peice of steel with every stud installed on it, bolt flange down to that and weld all you want.

 

right on, at least on b series the top of the head kinda gets in the way because of the width. on sigle cam engines this might not be the case but having just a thick peice of steel makes it easier and more mobile.

 

We use a 5/8" Thick that is 7" wide that has both head patterns on it.

I'll try to get at least a 5/8" plate from metal scraps at the job, and drill the hole pattern using press drill. I'll fix the flange on the plate with bolts.

In the meantime, I still have my dummy head, I might give it a try someday, or use it as a flower pot.

 

Start in the middle and work your way out, try to give a little time for cooling for ideal results. Also, you want at least a 5/8" plate, the wider the better. Make sure you have it clamped well, preferably bolted down where each head stud would go.

 

pfffff I welded my Log without it bolted down or clamped down still holding strong and no warpage

 

i did perfek360's like that, it warped, but a quick trip to the jet sander too take of that.

 

Lucky you both - Mine has warped so much it doesn't fit on the head anymore, even if I redrilled all hole up to 1/2" in diameter to give it a try. And I don't have acces to a flat surface grinder.

Maybe I welded too hot or too long on one side, I'll try to ------ the work evenly.

 

You probably welded the flange on wronge
