Default Can you short out a battery????

I was driving my car and i heard a funny noise. Wasnt running hot, no problems so i drove home (1/4 mile) and later when i went to start my car it wouldnt start. i had no power really... the battery is a week old, and when i popped my hood i noticed that my lower radiator hose ruptured under the dizzy, and sprayed everything. Well, through my troubleshooting, i figured out that if my battery is connected to a positive, and negative, with NO loads coming off of it, that my positive terminal smokes and gets really hot.. So again, can you short out a battery?

Yeah they can short out, try touching a screw driver to both therminals, actually don't cause it may explode. Batteries can short themselves internally. I had it happen to me battery was weak and went to take out to have tested and it was hot as hell so I just picked up a new battery hours later the old battery was still hot as hell. I left the used battery in the Burger King parking lot, I wasnt gonna risk it blowing up in my trunk.
