Well I just received my turbo from Down2turbo. It seems to have up and down play. I was under the impression rebuilts do not have play. I know oil may tighten it up be is this normal? Guys with rebuilts and down2turbos please chime in.

 

Yes, you should have some amount of play...otherwise, the oil can't get between the shaft and bearings.

i have pulled junked turbos with little to no play. new bearings don't fix a worn shaft.

 

The play is very little but I thought I would be no notiecable play at all....I'm sure its normal. My other turbo has play and is old as hell and doesn't smoke and spools great.

 

I've had a couple new turbos and the Down2turbo I got seems to have -0- play, while the other new one I had seemed to have a bit more play than I thought it should for being a brand new turbo. Oil should tighten it right up. I've used shitty turbos with hella shaftplay and after installing they tightened right up with no smoking.

my d2t had a lil play, it worked fine for a long time.. id recommend them

 

I saw him sell a XSPOWER T4 compressor on ebay

 

just squirt a little oil in it and then see if it tightens up. on my new turbo there was a good bit of side to side, but no in and out play. i was a little worried about it, but everything was fine. i have since take the turbo off and the shaft was loose, i squirted a little oil in it and it tightened up. just as long as when u spin it u dont hear, chhhh chhhh chhh.....

 

You're right, but they do make oversized bearings to fit a smaller shart. The problem is that not everybody that rebuilds turbos will actually check the shaft for wear. They just slap in new "stock" sized bearings and seals and out the door they go.
