Default Smoke...

I understand how that turbos do NOT have mechanical seals. Could someone please explain to me a little better on what actually forms the oil/air seal in the turbo. Is it ONLY the piston ring that forms the main seal?

I just recently started having a REALLY bad smoke problem, and i am wanting input on possible causes.

Dont get me wrong.. I have some ideas.. but i wanna see if anyone throws a comment out thre that i havent thought about.

Last night i threw a needle valve on the oil feed, and that seems to have dissapated the prob, unless i am on the gas hard; reving quickly.

Im not too sure if it is blow-by. Would there be any way to tell if thats the culprit? I have already re-routed the PCV to the Intake side of the Turbo, and that hasnt done much to alivieate the problem. I was boosting for approx 1-2 months BEFORE re routing the breather.. Me thinks that was a bad idea.

How much oil does the turbo actually need? I have the needle valve half way closed.. but i am afraid to close it any more because i dont want the turbo to fail Totally.

Help me out please.. Thanx.

Edit:: I did not have this smoke problem Before the t4 conversion.

Dose your return line flow good back into the oil pan?

If it has been smoking for a while and you just now put on the NEEDLE valve(restrictor)(I am having smoke issues right now also...mostly at idle though...I need to get a restrictor on mine and see if that solves it.) However if you are experiencing smoke when you REV-HARD-QUICKLY...then you probably have oil in your intercooler or piping...unless you already cleaned them...check your BOV...and check all your piping...it could also be blowby thru the exhaust(do you have a resonator or resonating exhaust?) depending on which seal was actually allowing the most or majority of the oil out. If not...check the return line...and see if that is blocked/bent. THat is about all I got...Check all your piping and the intercooler if you have one...I do believe you can find out what kind of pressure each turbo needs...not positive...but thought that something would be able to tell...I will check maximum boost tonight and see if I can find anything...

^^^^ Great info. Now that i think about it, i just may have oil in the IC piping. Its only been smoking about 4 or 5 days, and i put the restrictor on last night. The smoking has gone down little to none, except when im on it hard. Then after a hard ride, it smokkes at idle.

This happened to me, a new return and a restrictor did not fix it. Had to rebuild mine because my seals were bad. Don't ask me how they got bad, but they were. Now my return line isn't even really that pretty, but because I rebuilt it myself it isn't smoking at all anymore, good luck.

If its already smoking, theres a really good chance its already done with. If your drain is perfect, you've got a restrictor on, charge pipes/IC cleaned out, and it still smokes then time for a new turbo.

*sniffle* that is the fear with my current turbo right now...I guess once I get the restrictor on there...I shall see what the problem is.
