ZC Motor & Tranny Q
I've found an excellent deal on an imported ZC motor with tranny attached. My question is about the tranny.
How different is the gearing on the ZC tranny compared to my SI? I've heard that it's a little longer which means a little slower acceleration... but that's not a big deal to me considering this is just my daily driver & the turbo makes up for any loss. Anyone have any ratio numbers for me? I think I'll just stick with the ZC tranny to make the swap much easier, or throw in a better clutch.

Here you go.

boost you beat me too it
but for the lazy people,
the ZC has bigger 1-5th gears, but a smaller (3.8
final drive, while the SI has smaller 1-5th gears, but a bigger final drive, they are almost the same.
BUT the ZC tranny's differentail holes are bigger and require 3 peice axles (intermediate shaft + 2 axles) which helps make up for torque steer and ----.
beefer axles, and just a little bit longer gears...not that big of deal especially w/ the boost.
not anywhere near as bad as a dx tranny

Should I just stick with the ZC tranny then? I like the idea of a stronger/newer tranny, and it appears that the 1-4 gears are longer and the 5th gear is shorter. I don't mind the 1-4 gears, but I sure would like to extend that 5th gear out there some more. Wonder if I should throw in my SI 5th gear... that would extend it more than stock si because of the ZC's final drive.
According the the tranny/math calculator, with the ZC tranny and SI 5th gear, I would be cruising at 2658rpm at 60mph... check that out:
1st - 38mph = 7097rpm (stock zc)
2nd - 63mph = 7038rpm "
3rd - 91mph = 7039rpm "
4th - 119mph = 7044rpm "
5th - 160mph = 7089rpm (Si 5th gear and ZC final drive!)

get the zc tranny and keep it stock!! its gearing is fairly short, good for acceleeration, and youll love the equal lenght axles. try to get the motor and tranny with the intemediate shaft already on it, if not its gona be a bitch to find one cheap. torque steer gets reduce a whole lot! use axles from a 90-93 teg :P
