Ok, so me and everybody else I've ever known have developed rod knocks on any y8 motor we've had. I have come to the conclusion that the oil pump is to blame. I looked on www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and sure enough, the part # on the D16y8 and D16z6 oil pumps are different. I couldn't find another oil pump with the same part # as the y8. So, I'm thinking about trying to run a z6 oil pump on my y8 but I need to find out if anyone knows if it will fit/work right. Just a thought, but well worth it if we can do it considering about 9 y8's that I've seen eat ----. Anyone?

with the Z6 pump you will need a z6 oil pan. the y8 pan is diffrent. and chacko is unsing a D16y8 motor with 10-13 PSI and the pump is fine. no problems with it

 

I'm not saying that the y8 pump will fail for sure, it's just that I really have seen about 9 of these motors now just trash the bearings because of oil problems. I've heard of others on the internet having the same problem. It just bothers me with all the work I'm doing to this motor.

 

i wonder if its the head. chacko is using the y8 block but a z6 head. If the head is taking too much oil that could do it too.

 

So the z6 oil pan would be needed, but would it fit? I'm not sure it would be the head, I think it's definately something about that pump. I wish there was a for sure solution to this problem being solved.

 

is there an aftermarket oil pump we could use?

 

no hesusing a y8 pan. its using the y8 oil pump and it works fine.

 

what is so bad with pump. it flows too much and starves the lower end or doesnt flow enough?
