wifes car cant get rid of CEL
alright first off car is a 98 civic lx just basic intake, exhaust, keeps giving me code po172 which is (sytem rich) in haynes manual and on strap-on scan tool (system rich bank1) but anyway had a hairline crack in manifold (repaired with manifold sealant) put a new universal o2 in it last year and just changed map sensor last night and code still comes back.now i was thinking maybe an injector was stuck open flooding bank 1 with fuel that the ecu cant compensate for but almost out of ideas and i live in virginia so now that the emmisions test for obd II cars have to hook up directly to the obd port i have to have this light gone in order to pass. any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if you are thinking an injector is stuck open, check your spark plugs to see if they all look the same.

just did a tune up about a month ago and code has been there longer than that so i know plugs should still be good but will check them anyway any thing else i should be looking for or what else it could be going to check injectors and plugs tomm. i have another set of injectors and a set of iridium plugs ill throw in it. |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
swap cyl 1 injector to 4 and see if the code changes to cyl 4. ?
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
the code is for bank 1. isnt bank 1 cylinders 1and4 considered bank one like the pwo and pr3 jdm b16 that the ecu reads from 2 banks instead of one could be wrong but enlighten me
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
you could also get a fuel pressure gauge on it and see if the pressure dropps when the car is off, which will show a leaking injector.
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if your civic is a 4 cyl then you only have bank one
in a v6 or v8 u have banl 1 and bank 2 you have a upstreaM and maybe a downstream o2 check your egr valve it may be malfuntioning, and can cause a rich condition i do emmisions repairs at work and we get a lot of egr valvs some sticking or even the egr port could be cloged and ---- |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
the 1st gen b16's read off of 2 banks and its a y8 motor so there is no egr valve at all
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
and yes it has an upstream and downstream o2's most all obdII cars do at least honda's do
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
have u replace both? when one isnt working prop it can condem the other aswell or buy it self
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if u have a scanner why don`t u plug it up and take it for a drive and check all the readings
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
yes you only have bank 1, obdII ownes you :1. If you have a universal 02 sensor I would start there. If it checks out then do just like you would anything else when checking for running rich, fuel pressure, compression, tune-up, bluh bluh bluh.

AND YES OBDII DOES OWN THE ---- OUT OF ME!!!!!!! |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
ok put an upstream and downstream o2 in it and still same thing. clean out fpr and reset ecu still lost any other sugg.
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if your tps is reading wrong it might be adding to much fuel, you could also have a leaky injector, check your plugs for fouling
|
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if your tps is reading wrong it might be adding to much fuel, you could also have a leaky injector, check your plugs for fouling it could also be the cat, its job is to burn the unburnt fuel, if its not firing it would give u rich reading on the downstream,
use a infered thermomiter to check the temp of the cat when it is hot, you should be about 40% hoter on the back side of the cat |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
just take the bulb out..problem fixed

You can use the scan tool to erase the error code. I've used a Snap-On scan tool and it has the option.

Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
Did you make sure the universal O2 sensors were wired properly? After reading all the posts, the only thing I have to add is a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel return line. Before you check the FPR, disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 seconds. Reconnect it, start the car and see if the light is still on. If the light is still on (based on all the parts you've changed) ask someone that have access to Alldata or Mitchell on Demand to check and see if there was a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that was issued for 1998 Civics regarding this check engine light issue.

have already checked micthell and was following most of its guide lines checked the stock fpr but now have another to replace it with. havent checked the return line as of yet but i guess thats my next option. anything else to look for that maybe i have left out. |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
I suggested you check for any Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) but you did not state if you did. See link below for some information I found online. Read the summary for the cause of your problem.
You can verify the information by checking the TSB section in Mitchell on Demand. http://www.hondacivicforum.com/recal...010202/TSB.htm |

Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
if uv been dumping fuel in it for a while it will be cloged up, tray taking it foar a nice hot rip on the highway if that doesnt work you prob have to replace..
just get a universal put in for like 110 |
Re: wifes car cant get rid of CEL
