withe the nonboosted i advanced that sucker all the way to 10 with no prob on my 96 d-16y7 past that depending on the kind of gear you have you will get pre ever ona normal motor under acceleration. with boost you can do the same if if if you have a boost timing master from MSD. other wise 1 or 2 degrees will do.

One tooth on the cam gear = 12 degrees right? so the ten degrees of +/- adjustment shouldn't leave anyone worrying about valve interference.....(unless your timings not right to startwith!! 
) I'vefound that 3degrees of advance works very well with my current setup....advancing beyond that didn't seem to improve things at all.....
