vtec head on a zc?

would it be possible to slap a vtec head on a sohc zc motor? what head do you guys recomend i use? how hard do you guys think it would be...would any trained honda mechanic be able to do it?

Re:vtec head on a zc?

My buddy was wondering the same thing but i dont know if it would be worth it. Somepeople say the sohc zc is the same output as a d16a1 and some say it has like 120 hp. Info on this would be great. And arent we all trained machanics here ::) LOL.

Re:vtec head on a zc?

Ummm..yes. They did make a SOHC ZC with VTEC. It's just like a Z6, but it's not. It made about 125hp.

The non-VTEC version was basically an A6.

k i understand they made a sohc zc with vtec...but mine doesnt have vtec, would it be possible to put a vtec head on a zc block is what im wondering

Re:vtec head on a zc?

Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a smartass.

Yes, it's possible. You can put a VTEC head on any block as long as it doesn't interchange from DOHC to SOHC or vise versa(i.e you can't put a SOHC VTEC head on a DOHC ZC and you can't put a DOHC ZC head on a SOHC block.)

Re:vtec head on a zc?

don't you end up with something like 12.X:1 compression with a ZC bottom end and a y8 top end?

Re:vtec head on a zc?

my honda friend said it WAS possible to put a dohc head on a sohc block...... :-\

Re:vtec head on a zc?

I'm not going to say he is wrong, but I'm 99.9% sure you can't do it. Anybody want to confirm this? :-\

Re:vtec head on a zc?

anything is possible. you can do it. if yo ucan bolt it up
or make some adapter or something stupid i dunno but anything is possible

Dr.Boost 01-07-2004 11:11 PM

Re:vtec head on a zc?

I don't think they will bolt up for some reason. ???

Re:vtec head on a zc?

it'll bolt up as far as i know, just your valves wll make holes in your pistons the second you crank it over.

WhiteZC 01-09-2004 12:03 AM

Re:vtec head on a zc?

and why is that?

Re:vtec head on a zc?

the valve relief in the pistons

DOHC piston have valve relief for DOHC head

AND SOHC pistons have valve relief for SOHC head

i guess if u where to use differennt piston but i am not sure about the bolting up part

Re:vtec head on a zc?

Actually the valve releifs are about the same size and that really isnt the problem. Oil passages are not shaped the same, and some chanfering needs to be done. 2 head bolts do NOT align up, and some serious drilling would be needed to be done on the head, and I have no idea if their is enough meat in the ZC head to cut away to be safe and have the bolt still go through?? I mocked one up and looked at everything, The cylinders all align just fine with the head. ITs real real close, but the head bolt situation makes it a big NO GO!

Also if you were to put a DOHC ZC head on say a D16a6 you would get around 8.25 c/r. Which is really low for a honda and probably would run like ----.

Re:vtec head on a zc?

ok if u can do that can u put a dohc vtec head (b16 b18 head )on a b16a1 cause as far as i know thats the only heads that r dohc vetc, because i thought u couldnt cross b seried and d series and have it work

Re:vtec head on a zc?

Some one on this board was saying how you can put a DOHC ZC on a d block. ive never ehard of that before but i guess anythings possible right??$$

i recently put a z6 on a SOHC ZC, does anyone know if the SOHC ZC have the pm7(jdm zc) pistons?
while doing the swap i was too busy scraping the head gasket off the block i forgot to look...!

if it IS the pm7 pistons my set-up yeilds 12.35.

if my ZC came with the pm6 pistons set up yeilds 9.71.

both are with the .048 thickness gasket in an attempt to lower compression for boost.

* according to http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm *

i kick myself in the ass for forgetting to look at the pistons...

post some ideas up about worst case scenario, 12.35 comp. with boost, yikes...!

Re:vtec head on a zc?

evosol did you use the intake manifold from the zc or the z6. I heard there where issues with the dohc zc motor and fitting intake mani's but was wondering about the sohc.

Re:vtec head on a zc?

ShoPow,
i put a Z6 head on a SOHC ZC shortblock...
I'n not quiet sure i understand your Q.
but if your asking if the SOHC ZC IM will fit other d-series blocks?
A: yes, it will fit but my ZC came carburated, and yes i used the Z6 IM with the z6 head.

Re:vtec head on a zc?

between the z6 and y8, what would the best head be for a sohc zc motor?

evosol 01-21-2004 04:28 PM

Re:vtec head on a zc?

either heard that you can get you hands on cheapest!

Re:vtec head on a zc?

i also seem to have a problem.....since my car has a zc, and its not suppose to pass ref inspection(even though it did somehow)i was wondering if i put on a vtec head and went to go get smogged, would they say anything?

evosol 01-22-2004 03:15 PM

Re:vtec head on a zc?

i think it would pass smog but maybe not visual, depending how strict they are. I live in an area where smogging is not regulated. ;D
