Dude it's simple but once this is done the shift light will only work when VTec is on it will no longer work with the tach so if you're trying to do both you can't unless you get a second light. Also the light might be different so it may not work if not just goto Pep Boys and buy a LED but it should work the same as any other light. The VTec solinoid puts out 12v when VTec kicks on. What does a that light need to turn on... 12 volts.. unless Shift lights are different and need a different voltage. Put find out which one of the two wires on the light is your positive and which one is the negetive. Ground the negetive wire somewhere and just splice the power wire into the single wire on the VTec solinoid.. if you can't find the wire I'm talking about you should be doing this since there's only one wire for the solinoid and it's the solinoid not the oil switch. Most people just get T taps and use them. Thats it it should work now when VTec comes on. Although unless your light isn't as brite as my Autometer shift light good luck seeing at night when it comes on unless you put the cap on it.

Not to disagree with you EF9 but if he taps off the + wire to the solenoid he may run the risk of burning the ecu or the portion of the ecu that controls the vtec. You see the ecu will only alow a certain wattage or draw of power to the vtec solenoid.A 12 volt 20 wat light bulb will draw more power than the vtec solenoid.Overdrawing a circiut runs the risk of burning the wire or the source.

What can you do? You can use the voltage frome the ecu to the vtec solenoid to power a relay,to power the light. Try to find a relay that needs only a few milliamps to power it.

so here is what you do:

Get yoursefl a relay

T-tap a wire of the + wire to the Vtec solenoid( frome the ecu).Take that wire and a ground to power the relay or turn it on.( + and -)

Take a wire frome your battery(+),put a 2 to 5 amp fuse in line.Take that wire to one of the normally open side of the relay(this is what will power your light)

Frome the other side take another wire to the light plus a ground to the light.

Thats it!Now your ecu will turn on the relay, that will turn on the light. That is the safest way to do it.

Rafael

PS:if you dont know what a relay is or how it works, just think of it as a light switch that instead of it needing you to manually turn it on, it needs power couse it has an electrictro magnet inside that when energized pulls on a piece of metal wich completes the circuit.

That is step by step.Anny simpeler and I might as well do the hook up my self

Ok thalwr1 you dont have a ecu with vtec.Sorry I got cought up in the writeup but your post title emplys you want a cool guy light that comes on when your vtec does. You want a tach to activate your vtec.

Heres what you do:
1-get a tach with a shift light or an out put for a shift light.A shift light by its self wont work couse its just a light.Or maybe you have one that is RPM adjustable withought a tach to activate it.Its the tach that will acctivate the vtec at a set RPM as if it were the shift light.

2-Take the wires frome the tach that would normally go to the light and take them to the vtec solenoid(+ and - ).

3-Set your tach so the shift ligt circuit comes hot at 5000k RPM(or what ever the hell you want, but I reccomend 5000) and instead of the light comming on the vtec will get power(12 volts) and your in buisness.

Thats it!

Hey if you dont understand what the ---- Im trying to explain to your simple little mind that dont mean Ive never done it before.I have done both installs and they have both worked.
That light you have wont ------- work couse its only got three wires like you said. 1 for power,1 for RPM signal, and one for ground.
Ok smartiepants how do you ------- expect the light to put out voltage at a set RPM if it doesnt have an output wire like a tach with a shift light does does?
I have another option that would work but since you were a ******** by assuming that I dont know what the ---- Im talking about I wont ------- tell you.Next time you ask a ------- question and you dont get the answer you want to hear dont assume its wrong!!
