vtak tranny or LS
 
Well I have been searching around for a few days to see what transmission would better sort a B series turbo vtec. I haven't been able to find any intelligent answers onto what transmission would be better and why. Any real information appreciated.

Run whatever you've got. Short gears with traction are fun, but at a point, finding traction is hard.

Depends on the gear ratio. Ls tranny with a lower gear ratio would probably be better traction-wise. Your choices will also be different if you decide to run either a cable or hydro tranny.

I've been wonderin the same question lately. I've got a built block GSR ready for boost, currently using cable S1/J1 trans. Gears feel too short for me, fun on the street, but I'm a top end type of person who enjoys traffic free top end highway runs every now and then. I was thinkin a LS trans would be more preferable, but i'm not sure how much i'd be suffering on the everyday driveablilty of the car since this motor makes like no power out of vtaX (9.1:1 compression). So stick with the B16 trans or grab and LS, or maybe even toss in an LS 5th, i kinda hate sittin at 5k at 80mph daily cruisin to work and back?

Well I currently don't have either so that's why I am doing some research first. I have heard from several people that traction is a big issue with using the vtec trannys. Then again other people were saying the LS is just to long and isn't suited for a vtec motor designed for higher rpm. Haven't heard anything for any on boost though.

Boost makes everything better.

At about 230-240whp on an LS, GSR is a good tranny and so is B16B with LSD, those are the only two I've gotten rides/tuned, and they hook decently and make really fun street cars.

this is completely true, shorter gears are always better.

i like vtak tranny's 3rd gear with boost.

traction wont be too big of a deal depending on how early your spooling, if you spool up pretty fast then definately the ls tranny

with 300 whp, my LS tranny on my LS motor is perfect. i still have no traction in 1st or 2nd, but it hooks up great in 3rd. im at about 7200 rpm in 4th at the end of the 1/4 mile too.

My cable gay-dm S1 tranny seems to be a decent vtec tranny. It never falls out of the secondary range when I shift and has a great final drive for the tons of highway driving back and forth to work. Even in it's current n/a b16 form (although slightly beefed up) and with heavy ass 17" wheels I can still grab a mean 3rd gear shred. With the old boosted LS though it didn't catch traction until mid-way through 3rd gear, but it pulled like a rocket through 3rd and 4th.

Slightly off topic, anyone have any info on the S1's? I have to do a rebuild on it very soon...4th gear's starting to whine like there's a supercharger under the hood. :P

And fifth scratches...then pops out while cruisin.....aint that a bitch....
I need me a 1st gen b16 tranny with an lsd...

lol damn you guys got some bad trannys lol. luckily ive never had any tranny issues with any of my cars except this 87 4wd nissan sentra i had. the guy i bought it from rebuilt the tranny with gears out of a 2wd tranny, so im guessing thats why my tranny got fucked so hard. every gear basically went out except 4th i think, then the flywheel got busted all up and there was pieces everywhere when i opened it up. needless to say i got rid of that car haha. it was tons of fun in the winter out in the dunes though.

my b16 2+4th was grinding like a slut, and my boy hook me up with a free ls tranny, so I swap the internals, and now running ls internals in a b16 shell. only difference I see is the rpms. feel the same to me.

im running the b18b not boosted yet with the gsr trans the torque feels great when it delivers to the ground.

Most prefer the GSR gearing with boost.

If it were me I'd run the b16 with a LS final drive. But I care more about gearing than most do.

I have read your post on Honda-tech. Too much info!!! I get pulled down the straights from guys making 200 less horsepower. Everytime I shift into 4th gear they start the massive 5 car lengh lead going down the straight. I always run them down at the end of the straight. A VW went by me and sounded like he shifted in the same damn gear, then pulled away like I was standing still 3000 rpm 10 pounds of boost at 70 mph.

I have been working on a trick tranny for the past few weeks.
1st and 2nd who cares its what I use in the pits
3- 1.269 (ls 3rd gear)
Dog rings
4- 1.107 (92 gsr)
stock synco
5- 1.0 (aftermarket)
4.4 final drive.

I'm a little bit scare to run this aftermarket 5th gear under racing conditions for a long time. So tranny cooler and 5th gear oiler will be finished before this next session.

no, ls is horrible gear ratios, and is the weakest of them all.

i hate the ls tranny, its odd driving in 25 mph zones, especially when u have a third gear grind, and 25 is 2ndish 3rd gear because gears are so long

i hate my ls tranny im going to sell it.

Well I just got a LS tranny, and havent got it in yet.......
That B16 tranny i had that sounded like ----.....well it has no 3rd anymore wont go into 4th
I got 1st 2nd and 5th.....
