Default Are transmission gears supposed to look like this??

I pulled apart my tranny because of the hole in the side of the case, and I inspected the rest of the gears/stuff inside.
I really don't know what I am looking at, but I noticed that the gears have little notches on the teeth that are uniform around the gear. Because they are so uniform, I am led to believe that they were put there from the factory for a reason. So thats my question, are the notches supposed to be there or is there some sort of wear pattern/damage that just happens to be uniform. Heres a pic to show you what I mean (click to enlarge):

Thanks for the help!
