Tranny took a dump...

Tranny took a dump...
Ok, had autocross yesterday, and after my first run.. i notice a puddle of oil under my car.
The axle seal was leaking (no big deal right?)...
Anyway, Called buddy to order a seal, but it wouldn't be in til monday. So we go get some oil from the gas station, and put a quart in... hoping to drive the car home. The entire quart ended up draining out. (Well crap)..
So we decided to drive it on what was in the tranny, since the transfer case sits below the axle, it would still have a good bit of oil in it..
I start driving, and something didn't feel right (maybe i was paranoid)... So we pull off at a Discount Shoe store.
I parked there, and the manager was more than happy to let me leave it for a few hours.
We go home, and pop a used seal out of one of friends many (automatic) transmissions  ...
I went back to fix my problem, and by this time its getting dark, and looks like it might rain (again)...
I finally get to the seal in the (gravel) parking lot.. and realize I have BIGGER problems.
The seal had been eaten alive... and a shard of metal (the size of a match stick) was petruding from within the tranny.
Upon further inspection, (looking thru the axle hole) the races? on the ball bearing (for the diff) were completely gone, and the ***** were laying at the bottom of the bearing...
Oh, and we towed it (thanks to my brother, and a bigass trailer), and when we got it to the garage, went to drive it down the ramps, and the lower ball joint (which i had seperated to get axle out) popped off again (the bolt was already stripped a bit)... so the wheel got cocked, and the car stuck halfway down the ramp... We had to get the back-hoe, and chain the front of the car, lift it up and pull it into the garage... (not a fun night)
So, Im gonna open it tonight, and see whats happening inside. Hopefully I can spare the transmission, and the new LSD diff is not shot. We'll see...
If anyone knows a bit about transmissions, I'd like to pick your brain a bit. Thanks all.

Re: Tranny took a dump...
yea, obx...
I will take pictures after I get the housing off tonight.
Im wondering if its because I re-used the stock shim (for the factory diff) when I installed the obx unit. I also didn't check my clearance (between shim, and bearing?). So idunno, im an idiot.
PS, I was searching around google, and your page came up... weird huh?

Re: Tranny took a dump...
I posted this up on another forum, and your name showed up again... Apparently you are the man when it comes to trannys.

PS. I found a used D16y8 transmission, but Im not sure if my current OBX differential will fit the Y8 unit. Any insight on this?
EDIT: Nevermind... It will work. I did some searching (not sure if the tranny is plug-and-play to the z6 setup tho).

Re: Tranny took a dump...
Pics:
Im pretty sure its salvagable... but I didn't like the excessive amounts of metal in/around the magnet. Im sure they all came from the 1 bearing, but still.
So, what Im thinking, is put my old VX transmission in my car until I can get this one back together... and together right.
Im attempting to contact GearSpeed, and order some carbon synchros.. (since mine are old anyway, i figure time for an upgrade).. and maybe order all new bearings, seals, etc.
Anyway, here are some pics:
Missing Something?
Inside the tranny:
Metal on the magnet...
Chunks that I pulled from transmission :
Where the diff sat:
Factory Shim:
Diff looks good...
The other bearing was about to explode:
Ill need to get my ball joint fixed now (lower control arm)
