Swapping gears for mpg (question)

I plan on running a B16 trans on my daily, but because of the 4.4 final drive, it's not too good on the highway. I know it's possible to swap gears out of a ls trans, so you can have a long fifth gear. Can anyone tell me what all is needed to make this work? Both of my trans are small shaft, 1 gen's. Thanks guys.

need a 5th gear SET, thats 5th gear of both shafts 90-91 LS tranny.

BTW, Honda doesn't have any left, don't think I do either.

I have a spare LS trans sitting around, so I was gonna take from that one. That's good to know. Thanks Mista :y

Yeah, I was worrying about that. When I was running my all-motor setup, in my Rex, I was going through the traps over 8 grand in fourth. I don't plan to drag this car as much as my last though, so I'll give up a little time in the quarter, for better driveability.

so it has to be 90-91? What's the best way to identify these trans out of the car? Local jy supposedly has a pile of trannies with cracked cases a buddy can get cheap. Figure i'll take a clutch disk for reference on the input shaft but what else do I need to look for?

Re: Swapping gears for mpg (question)

The input shaft is the dead giveaway. I don't believe there is anything else that's different. Don't qoute me on that. :1

Re: Swapping gears for mpg (question)

I won't, that's only to tell if it's 90-91 or 92+. I'm asking how to tell what gears would be in it. If I want to put an ls 5th in my b16 and if they both need to be 90-91 then obviously they'll both have the small shaft.

90-91 USDM Tegs, only one tranny was available, should make it REALLY easy to figure out :)

LS trans are 4.26 final. B16 is 4.4.

With that VAGUE statement, I'll put a $1500 bet on the line. You accept?

If not, suck a dick because you'll know I'm right, and like a bitch you'll swallow or atleast choke on my load.

Re: Swapping gears for mpg (question)

yup, they didn't do any research, but copied others misinfo.

http://home.cinci.rr.com/mistab0ne/tranny.html

DX/LX second is same as CX/DX @ 1.761
CX/VX 4th is .852

I made those slight "errors" on purpose so I'd know who was using info I took time to post.

Re: Swapping gears for mpg (question)

I have a B16 tranny with LS 5th and i love it. Mine is 99-00 though so parts were easy to find. I replaced the bearings and seals while i had it apart. Nothing too complicated. Throw in an LSD while you are in there.
