Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
OK over time the threads have stripped out of the holes on top of the tranny. So now i can't drive because it's leaning like a mofo and i have a jack holding it up, Should i just go buy a tap thats a few steps bigger then the stock holes and rip it through?

Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
I'm going to have to go to home depot and buy a tap or two, Becuase when they first stripped i just steped the bolt size up and reamed it in there creating new threads on on the bottom half of the hole over the old threads, and i guess those broke loose as well. I thinking it's because i'm running sold avid moutns so all the force gets put right on those bolts with no give at all. I'll let you know what happends when i get home.

IF yours is too messed up at this point, get a 1/2 tap since it's a little bigger, and use a 1/2 bolt. |
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
yeah i'm going to have to use 3 bolts now instead of 2 studs and a bolt, Because i can't find any studs that will work now that i'm goign to have to step up to a 1/2" bolt. It should be good though we'll see what happends tonight. O and i never use impact (air or electric) on anythign in my car, hand tools seem to be just as fast because thats what i'm used to using. but sence i'm going to be using all bolts what i'm goign to have to do is jack the tranny up to the position that it's going to be in and then tighten the bolts down, other wise the wieght of the tranny will just strip the new threads out, Thats why they use studs on the mounts because it transfers the wieght to the upper lip of the mount instead on having the weight focused on the threads.

it is not the impact that is damaging the threads.
It is the idiots who try to pull the tranny into place without fully jacking it into place. A buddy in detroit is known for this. The old tranny of his, now in a different Sol, all three holes were helicoiled :) He also doesn't think letting the engine hang from 2 mounts while swapping the tranny hurts anything.......until he ripped the lower AC mount and motor also hit the floor, while he was under it :) |
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
helicoil = $80
tap & bolts = $20 |
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!

I'm just waitin for my ride to get here and i'm heading over to home depot to grad some ---- to make a MBC (15psi by days end) if i get the tranny ---- fixed. Helicoil kts don't seem to be readily availible around here, Them again in my area everything is so comercial (AZ,PB) just a bunch of bull ---- stores that don't know dick about anything.

|
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
12x1.25 (special) is $51 list, $39 my price, 3-5 day order
|
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
Taps are cheap, just make it bigger. |
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
i dont know but i had a set of harbor freight taps and dies and used a 12x 1.50 tap. it worked for me using the stock bolts.
I did this cause uppon removing the tranny from the junk the rear tranny mount and the driver side mount were the only thing holding the motor/trans as i removed the bolts form the rear trany m ount. Doh! next time supprt the motor so the weight of the engine doesnt fuc it up on the way out. |
Re: Stripped mount holes on tranny!!!
I can get these taps at work no problem. If you want one overnighted to ya I can do that, taps might be slightly used, but hey its a free tap.
pm me if u want it |

Only problem is that you will never run through 12 of the inserts. I just used two on my car and returned the kit, free thread repair FTW. |
