if the smell is gone with the vent off.
def.ly check ur engine bay.
it happened to my friend, he can smell gas and exhaust with the vent open.
it turns out one of his spark plug is loose, runs fine after tighten down.

and it happened to another friends 300ZX, turns out all 6 injector seal is leaking :-X :-X :-X

No my heater core is fine, I know how that smells. And tastes. Anyways it's cold as a bitch out and I haven't really checked my engine bay yet, hopefully it is something minor like a loose fuel filter connection. I'll check it out within the next year or so and raise this post from the dead with my results then ;D

when it comes to leaking fuel it's never minor. check your rail, injector seals, filter connection (inlet/outlet). a lot of enginebay fires happen during the winter because of this.

Ugh quit making me worry. I'd rather look into it next year. Maybe I'll do it this weekend. If I never post again yall will know what happened. Kyle you can have the cam outta my car in that case ;)
