Smoke when downshifting
It's a problem I had recently thought was my valve seals. I replaced the valve seals and it's still smoking. It's definately oil (bluish color and smells of oil), but when I downshift and let the RPM's slow the car (engine braking), as soon as I hit the gas again a big puff of blue smoke exits the exhaust. Is it possible for the valve guides to be leaking even though the seals are not? Could there be any other problems causing this? My compression test checked out excellent so I know at least the compression rings are good. Not sure if maybe the oil rings are gone :-\

Re: Smoke when downshifting
i would look at spark plugs, that would help determin which cylinder and if multiple cylinders, is your problem and go from there

Re: Smoke when downshifting
Well I checked them out last weekend when I installed the new valve seals. They looked to be in great shape. No heavy carbon buildup or darkness whatsoevever.

Re: Smoke when downshifting
not coming from valves, and if it was oil rings i would think it would do it more often, sooooo maybe you could put some red dye in your oil and tell people its just spitting FLAMES OF POWER.... i dont know. realy tho good luck tracking it down

Re: Smoke when downshifting
haha, It was shooting flames when the timing was off ;) But, we'll see. I'm sure I'll figure out what's causing this. Thanks for the help.

Re: Smoke when downshifting
Are you boosted?
Does the smoke have a particular smell to it? |
Re: Smoke when downshifting
pcv valve? high vacuum of closed throttle pulling oil in? just a guess.

Re: Smoke when downshifting
^^ my gsr was doin that before i put the catch can on.... chop throttle after a hard pull and a lil puff of smoke, then nothing
now it doesnt do it |
Re: Smoke when downshifting
Nope not boosted. It's a mini-me and it didn't do it for a good month of driving it. I'll certainly check the PCV and look into swapping the plugs etc.
