Is this just shiming the oil psi control spring to get more psi out of a pump?

How do you know what thickness shim to use to gain lets say 5 psi? Or is it just more of a guess? How much psi is to much psi?

I am working on and ls and wanted to add just a bit. The owner may one day want to go with a b16a head would this be a good idea (adding psi)?

shimming as that article suggests, you'll bump up you psi but at low and idle speeds your flow may not be there (not enough pressure to get past the spring) if your pump is old and slopped out

Ok nice my b oil pump has a y off the pump one to the oil psi control valve/spring and one going to the motor. So I should not have problems will low pressure at idle. I did a lot of measuring and found what the installed height of my oil spring is and what the shim I am using. It should bump installed height 4% but I do not think I will get 4% oil psi bump probably closer to 10%. I do not think springs are linier. My old machine shop had one off the valve spring tester I may con him into measuring the tension with a washer and with out to see when the spring will open.

I am planning on using a .065 shim LOL. My goal is going from 50 to around 55-58. Dose this all seam useless? Will to much psi hurt?

oil pumps can only deliver so much pressure at low speeds. shimming the spring, to a certain point, is fine. it's when people over-do it and the spring release rate is higher than that of what the actual pump can put out and still flow oil to the engine parts at the lower speeds

shimming the spring ONLY effects the bypyass pressure.

If the pump cannot meet the bypass pressure, shimming is useless.
