Rotary engine
Whats so good abt it?
My friend bought a Rx7 (RC) with turbo2 in it. and he said its gonna fast as hell. Its a turboed rotary engine that crazy??? I also heard that it has some major problems with it too. I wonder if one day hes racing and the engine would jus blow up! |
Re:Rotary engine
the motor is so compact (size of a 1/4 keg) they create a huge amount of heat and sometimes catch on fire. My friend had a 90 RX-7 and caught on fire like a mile outside his house. The car was on fire and he was still trying to rip the boost controller out of the dash. He than had to watch the car burn :'(
Also Apex seals go every 65,000 miles so they are high matinence. No cams, valves, timing belts, crankshafts, pistons, connecting rods. Instead a shitload of seals (corner seals, apex seals, oil seals) and 2 triangles that rotate around an eccentric shaft. |
Re:Rotary engine
I thought it was 3 triangles ???
|
Re:Rotary engine
But people are still using them for racing, drag racing.
If thats the fact man we will see lots of burn out FCs around. Yea its 3 triangles right? |
Re:Rotary engine
It's 2 triangles...the one with 3 triangles can be found in japan, engeland new zeeland, ;D 3 rotor.
I luv the Rotary engine though...high revs nice engine sound. nice and small |
Re:Rotary engine
Wankle is the ----.
Heres a link for all of you new to the rotary. The best part is its non-recipericating (very smooth) http://auto.howstuffworks.com/rotary-engine.htm |
Re:Rotary engine
the only 3 rotor is the 20B and its not in America
The 12A, 13B, 13B-REW were all 2 rotor motors |
Re:Rotary engine
everything ive read about the rotary and theory of operation is you must double its advertised displacment. If thats always the case then you could make a point that (in NA form anyway) this is a very shitty motor. I love the new rx8, 250hp and like... 160 ft lbs of torque? :P
My brother had a 1989 Rx-7 and he was a jackass and would always flood it by not allowing it to come up to operating temp before shutting it back down. |
Re:Rotary engine
i once heard a rumor that in the early 80s (?) they used a wankle engine in a artic cat snowmobile. i think im gonna research it now ;)
|
Re:Rotary engine
What about in that new rx8? Don't they use 3 rotars in that?
|
Re:Rotary engine
no, I think the renesis motor is still a 2 rotor. That Rx8 is the ugliest and most underpowered discrace to the RX name. The car is so pathetic it had to be recalled becuase they lied about how much power it actually made. They should get rid of that and do better with the RX-9. Somebody needs to put an end to this 4-door family/sports car trend.

Amen brother. I can't tell which is worse.. SUV's killing the sports car market, or limp wristed 'sports cars' IN the market. |
Re:Rotary engine
well wrx's and lancers more than make up for it. also dont rotary engines burn fuel? also, i was wondering since there isnt many internal mods you can do for it, how do you get enough ppower?? like 300 hp from a turbo rotary? just up the boost?
|
Re:Rotary engine
All engines burn fuel, I think you meant oil. Yeah they do burn oil becuase you have ot inject oil into the combustion chamber becuase both sides of the apex seals are exposed to the combustion process.
There is a shitload of modifications you can do to a rotary. The only way to get more power out of them is to do porting. Since all the power comes from the ports, porting the sidehousings is where you make power. Bridgeporting, street porting and porting the rotors is where you'll make insane power but the motor will only last about 10-30,000 miles before the apex seals need to be replaced the Rotary can make so much power becuase the combustion is pushing the rotar in a circle instead of straight down like a piston. however there are limits due to the centrifical force caused by rotating mass and the properties of the metal itself just my .02 |
